Books for Thought is where I post a discussion topic related to books, reading, writing, or something pertaining to one of the three. I hope you’ll join in, and discuss today’s topic of

binge reading a genre

I recently read Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas. I was searching through my books for Far From You by Tess Sharpe, and I found Dangerous Girls instead. I was all: what the heck, I’ll just read this one. I had heard so much about this book, and I was equal parts nervous and excited to read it. Nervous because hype really does not do anything for me, in fact more often than not hype will decrease my love for a book because I go in expecting it to be amazing. And excited because I had wanted to read it for a really long time.

I DEVOURED IT. It was one of those books that I just could not stop reading. It really was as good as everyone said it was. I won’t say anything more, because this post isn’t actually about that book. (But you should totally read it if you haven’t – especially since it is LGBTQIA+ AND mystery/thriller).

Anyway, once I finished DG, I was all: omg, this book was so fucking great. I need more books like this in my life.

And then I remembered that I’d purchased Made For You by Melissa Marr, which is ALSO mystery/thriller. So I read that immediately after. I really liked it.

I ordered Rosebush by Michele Jaffe a few books later, and this really cemented the fact that I am currently on a mystery/thriller binge. I just want to read these mysterious books where I can try and guess what happened or who the killer is or if the main character is going to live or not. There’s just this ~feeling~ I get when I read them, and it’s so different to reading any other genre.

The mystery/thriller genre was one I hadn’t really read much of, but when I went through my books on Goodreads to make my mystery/thriller shelf, I had really liked a lot of them. Which leads me to wonder why the hell I hadn’t read more, but better late than never, right?

I currently have a tonne of mystery/thrillers on hold at my library, and I cannot WAIT to sink my teeth into them. READ ALLLLL THE MYSTERY/THRILLERS.

What about you? Have you ever binged a genre? Which one?

  1. i can totally relate! I started binging on the mystery / thriller genre last year after I started reading books in The Harry Hole series – and I just can’t stop even know.

    • Chiara says:

Mystery/thrillers are so much fun to read, because there’s the usual desire to know what happens next, but the stakes are so much higher than any other genre! I think that’s why I like them so much :)

  2. Kayla says:

It’s kind of funny, because I usually don’t read mysteries and I just finished two in a row–“Beware the Wild” which was AMAZING and “Forget Me” which was fairly good throughout until the ending, which really disappointed me. But now I think I’m going to scrounge up more like this!

  3. Ah, this happens to me ALL THE TIME. I just finished reading a tonne of horror books, and right now I am on a contemporary binge (an interesting thing, considering I am actually working on writing a fantasy/magical realism type story, and I usually enjoy reading in the same genre as whatever I am currently writing!). But I’ve been adoring NA books, especially ones with heavy romance. I suppose I need a good dose of loving in my books right now ;)

    • Chiara says:

Ah, that’s so interesting! I read a lot of contemporaries, even though it’s not my favourite genre, because most LGBTQIA+ YA releases are contemporaries. *sigh* Is it weird that I write in a genre that’s not my favourite? Haha. Oh, I recently binge read two NA books in a series, and I really want to read the last one! They have a nice feel to them, and its good to just settle into a book that you know will end with a happily ever after!

  4. YESSS I’m so glad you loved DG! It’s one of my favourite books by far and I’m so glad you’re loving thrillers at the moment! My favourites are all of Rebecca James’s books, let me know if you’d like to borrow any of them! I also loved Pines and Gone Girl :D

    • Chiara says:

I really need to read Rebecca James’ books, especially now that I love mystery/thrillers so much! I have heard really good things about Gone Girl, but I watched the movie so I think it would be kinda ruined, haha.

  5. Mysteries/thrillers are my favourite genre so I know exactly what you mean! I love the whodunnit feels and trying to solve the mystery, all the twists and turns. If you haven’t tried them before Agatha Christie’s novels are fantastic. I hope the streak keeps up for you. I’m in a massive historical fiction mood at the moment so I’ve been bingeing those a little.

    • Chiara says:

Right? There’s those elements that are so specific to mystery/thriller books, and I think they’re the reasons why they’re so fun to read. I haven’t tried Agatha Christie’s books before! I might have to give them a try, though :D

  6. Rebecca @ Reading Wishes says:

I don’t normally binge a genre, but I really enjoy mystery/thrillers and I’m glad to see you’re enjoying them! You mentioned a few I haven’t heard of, so I’m off to look them up right now :)

  7. Maraia says:

This is so funny, because I’ve been craving mysteries and thrillers, too! What ones do you have on hold at the library? I’ve mostly been reading adult mysteries and thrillers, not YA, but let me know if you want any recs. :)

    • Chiara says:

YAY! Two really good ones I’ve read recently are Three Truths and a Lie, and Last Seen Leaving, both of which I recommend. I’ll definitely let you know if I move into the adult world of mystery/thrillers!

  8. I’m the same way! Ever since I read Dangerous Girls I have been on a mission to find another book that is just as brilliant and twisted. I haven’t found any yet, but Made for You and Damage Done come pretty close.

  9. It sounds like a really wonderful binge!
When I binge genres it’s usually fantasy or I get in the mood for YA and just devour one after another. It’s so wonderful when you get to that point and just find amazing books!

    • Chiara says:

I read fantasy books so often I don’t really count them as my binges, haha! But I definitely think that when you actively seek out certain types of books that you have the binge bug. :D

  10. I do like to read books in a certain genre sometimes. I LOVE mysteries/thrillers. I read a lot of the adult books in this genre, because I feel like YA doesn’t have as many. I loved Dangerous Girls though so I’m happy you really loved that one. Did you know she has a book called Dangerous Boys too? I think you have to order it on Amazon or something like that though. I still haven’t read it, but I NEED TOOOOO! I also really want to read Made For You – glad you liked it!

    -Lauren

    • Chiara says:

I have found quite a lot of YA mystery/thrillers! Although, so far, I haven’t found one I loved as much as DG, which is a bit disappointing. I have actually read Dangerous Boys! I think I might have gone into it with too high an expectation, though, because it was very average for me :(

  11. Valerie says:

Does binging fantasy count? Because that’s all I MAINLY read. And I don’t really binge ANYTHING (other than Jessica Jones, especially towards the latter half). I just am scared of binging (this includes series, authors, etc.) because won’t I get sick of reading similar things? That’s what I tell myself at least. Maybe nothing has really held my attention yet…

    • Chiara says:

Totally! If you’re mainly reading something that totally counts as a binge. I have heard of people saying that, but I have binged a lot of series in my time and I’ve never felt like I was sick of reading about the same characters. If anything, it was more awesome because I never forgot anything :D Valerie, have you read

  12. Mystery/Thrillers are books that I’m ALWAYS on the look out for and it was never really a genre that I was interested in until Dangerous Girls. However, I rarely actually reach for them on my shelf because I get so nervous that they’re going to disappoint me and whenever I really love one it’s all I want to read! Kind of a vicious circle.

    • Chiara says:

Ah, DG is the catalyst book for you, as well! I have read quite a few disappointing mystery/thrillers since I’ve discovered my love for them, which kind of sucks. But I guess that’s the same with every genre, really!

  13. Romi says:

Okay, so (good post, nice writing *thumbs up*) you know I don’t like the scary stuff but I DO like crime/mystery novels and have read a nice amount in my time. You will soon see the rather large Christie shelf we have, and I do enjoy reading those, although I haven’t really *yet* strayed into much more modern mystery/crime/thrillers, because even the ones I’ve read that are written in more recent times are set in the past. I am a fraidy cat and the idea of getting *too* frightened unsettles me and probably makes me take less risks than I otherwise would when it comes to murder stories and the like, but after I read Dangerous Girls (WHICH I WILL) perchance you can rec me other books in this genre.
