mail

Books for Mail is basically me showcasing my addiction to buying books. Every two weeks, I’ll show you guys which books I have bought/received, and hopefully you’ll find some great titles!

Because I was super dodge two weeks ago, I didn’t do one of these posts. So this is about a month’s worth of books!

In My Mailbox:

SS Collage26a

All of the Above by James Dawson: An LGBTQIA+ contemporary YA. As if I could ever resist. Thank you Hot Key Books!

When I Was Me by Hillary Freeman: A girl wakes up and she isn’t inside her own life. HOW WONDERFULLY CREEPY! Thank you again, Hot Key Books!

The Next Together by Lauren James: A beautiful ARC copy of a story about reincarnation. Yes, please. Thanks to Walker Books Australia!

Newt’s Emerald by Garth Nix: This sounds ridiculously fabulous. I mean it’s set in ye olde times, and it’s about disguises and stealing things and YES. Thank you Allen & Unwin!

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon: I’ve already read and reviewed this AMAZING book. I don’t know why I waited so long to read it! Thank you, Bloomsbury Australia!

The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon: I’ve already read and reviewed this one, too. It was an incredible sequel, and I cannot wait until the third book. Thank you, Bloomsbury Australia!

What We Left Behind by Robin Talley: I was lucky enough to grab one of the last ARCs left of this beautiful book. I’ve been keen to read it since I first heard about it, and cannot wait to share my thoughts with you all! All the thanks to Harlequin Teen Australia for this copy!

The Story of Kullervo by J.R.R. Tolkien: My first Tolkien! In a gorgeous hardback, to boot. Thank you, Harper Voyager Australia!

In My Inbox:

SS Collage26b

The Casquette Girls by Alys Arden: I love how this kind of sounds like The Diviners, and I 100% need more historical paranormal books in my life. Thank you Skyscape!

A Drop of Night by Stefan Bachmann: I loved the sound of this book, and I was super glad to find out it’s a standalone! I need more of these in my life. Thanks so much Harper Collins!

Legacy of Kings by Eleanor Herman: I wanted SO much to love this, but it eventually fell kind of flat. You can see my full thoughts here. Thanks to Harlequin Teen Australia for this copy!

The Yearbook by Carol Masciola: A book where the main character isn’t sure whether she’s time travelled, or is mentally unstable? *grabby hands* Thank you, F+W Media, Inc.!

Shallow Graves by Kali Wallace: This just sounds so darn good, I could not resist. Thank you, Harper Collins!

sunday

Simply Sunday is a reading meme run here at Books for a Delicate Eternity. It’s where you can share your favourite quote of the week; be it from a book, a novella, a short story, a poem – whatever you like!

My Simple Thing:

“There was no normal. There never had been. “Normal” and “natural” were the biggest lies we’d ever created.”

A quote from Samantha Shannon (The Bone Season).

Why I Chose It:

Do I even NEED to say how much I love this quote? It’s so gorgeous, and so true. I really loathe the person that thought creating ‘normal’ was a good thing, because ‘normal’ has caused so many people so many pain. There is simply no such thing as normal, and I wish more people would realise this.

What books did you receive in the mail recently? What do you think of my Simply Sunday?

P.s. I opened up a writing/LGBTQIA/general blog!

  1. I absolutely love The Bone Season series—it’s so incredibly amazing. I got to meet/hear Samantha Shannon a few months ago and she is just as amazing in person.

  2. So many wonderful new books to read Chiara! I just started reading Legacy of Kings today, and it’s a bit…meh at the moment. Hopefully it picks up and gets better though. Trying to avoid reading too many reviews for it so I can go in with an open mind :D

  3. I’ve heard nothing but glowing reviews for The Bone Season and The Mine Order so I can’t wait to see what you think of them. Also I’m curious to see about your thoughts on Legacy of Kings – the reviews I’ve seen have been pretty mediocre so far unfortunately, but I’ll cross my fingers that you end up loving it. Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous recap! ♥

I loooooved those books. If you haven’t read them already, Zoe, I definitely recommend them!

I definitely did not end up loving Legacy of Kings, sadly :(

      Thank you, lovely!

YOU AND YOUR SODDING QUOTES. Why do they all have to be so gorgeous? Chiara it is not FAIR.
Normal is a huge issue for me. I once said to my brother that I’d prefer to be anything but normal or something like that, which he didn’t really agree with at all (and I can’t remember his point there but hey, maybe he thought I meant I wanted to be an alien invader from pigfarts), but normal- it’s just a word I shy away from with my entire being. Normal means I have to align with the thoughts and beliefs and looks and projective of society and I just want to be ME. I want to be able to go along and be different- be myself- and not even comprehend normal as a term. Because really, to me, no one is “normal”. What even IS normal?

So many pretties! Kullervo and When I was Me seem interesting, so I’ll look out for your reviews!

    • Chiara says:

      I’M SORRY. XD

I stand by the fact that “normal” does not actually exist. I think there are different “normals” for everyone, so that a true “normal” would be an impossible persona to fill. BE GONE WITH NORMAL, I SAY.

  5. Oh, I adore the quote you chose. It’s so very true, I think; the term “normal” is really just an excuse for arbitrary societal norms that, if one thinks about it, do more harm than good in the long run. Lovely post as always, Chiara. xx

  6. OOh I love receiving books in the mail, possibly the best kind of mail there is! I’m supposed to be receiving two books from the book depository and I ordered them around 2 months ago?? AND THEY STILL HAVEN’T ARRIVED! So annoying gah, and I’ve asked fro a refund and those ones haven’t come either! o frustrating! I’ve been hearing so many mixed things about Legacy of Kings and I can’t decide whether to give it a miss or not..

    • Chiara says:

For sure! Bookish mail is the best <3 OH NO. I hope they arrived, or that you got a refund for them! Mmm, I cannot say that i would recommend Legacy of Kings, unfortunately >.<

  7. GOD how I adore this quote. I hate that sometimes I find myself using this word, still after all the damage that has caused in the world and I hate myself for it. I wanna know who came up with it, too. Who thought to define a certain something or someone as “normal” or “natural”?! But I do believe that with the speech we all use daily, we can make a difference even if it’s just one person out there. THANK YOU! :)

  8. I’m glad you enjoyed The Bone Season! It wasn’t my cup of tea, but I thought the world building was crazy!

  9. Leah says:

I’ve added Newt’s Emerald, The Bone Season, and The Casquette Girls to my reading list!
