books-for-life

Books for Life is where I share bookish lists, recommendations, and favourites. You can also catch me talking about non-bookish things here, as well as my life outside of blogging. Today I’m talking about…

newer disney movies i love

I guess you could say I’ve been a Disney fan my whole life. My entire childhood was filled with Disney films (and that one sing-a-long VHS we had that was everything), and I grew up on them. And even as I got older, I still watched the new ones that came out. I never thought they’d be as good as the tried and true ones of ye olden days, but to my surprise, I have fallen deeply in love with a handful of them. So I thought I’d share my favourites of these newer Disney films with you today because… who doesn’t like talking Disney?

tangled

(source)

I mean… doesn’t everyone love Tangled? It’s absolutely adorable in every possible way. It’s also funny, and the romance is on point.

To be honest, though, when I first started seeing the posters for Tangled I wasn’t that keen. But then again, the posters that were everywhere were… bad. It was Flynn and Rapunzel and Pascal hiding in Rapunzel’s hair and I still hate that bloody poster. It doesn’t capture the cuteness and lightness of this movie at all.

I particularly like Tangled because I’ve always had super long hair, and called myself and been called Rapunzel a lot. Also, she likes books. I love her.

brave

(source)

Ah, Brave. This movie is everything I have ever wanted in a Disney film. It is entirely focused on family (yes, Frozen stans, there was a Disney princess film before Frozen that didn’t have romance in it), and in particular the relationship between Merida and her mother. A MOTHER/DAUGHTER DISNEY FILM. Like I said: everything I ever wanted.

And not only does Brave focus on family, but when Merida is supposed to be won by some dudes who want to marry her, she wins the tournament herself. BLESS. Brave is also just so damn magical. The little sprites are adorable, the animation is beautiful, the music is divine. Brave is by far my favourite recent Disney films, and it sits right up there with my old faves. It’s perfect.

Also see: Merida’s hair. I love it. So much.

big hero 6

(source)

I am not ashamed to say I cried a lot in Big Hero 6. It is by far the most underrated Disney film. Why does no one talk about how beautiful it is? How sweet? How it’s about family, and found family, and has the most adorable assistance robot in the world? I hate that everyone sleeps on this movie instead of forcing everyone around them to watch it.

So, if you haven’t: watch Big Hero 6, please. You won’t regret it. It’s so goddamn beautiful in so many ways.

I would like my own Baymax, please.

coco

(source)

Considering I only saw Coco this weekend I think it’s pretty evident how special it is. I had heard that Coco was really beautiful and touching so I was keen to give it a go. I wasn’t sure I would love it as much as everyone else but I did. I absolutely adored Coco.

Much like all the movies on this list, Coco has a big focus on family – both dead and alive. I think that, overall, is what made Coco so incredibly special. I absolutely loved Miguel and his passion for music, but also how much he loved his family – enough to keep that music hidden to protect them.

I honestly won’t say much more about Coco because I think it’s best watched without knowing too much about it. Just know that everything about this movie is beautiful.

What are some newer Disney films you love? Do you love any of these ones?

  1. Greg says:

I love Tangled. Awesome movie. And I haven’t seen brave but I need to.

  2. Big Hero 6 and Tangled are SO good! Baymax is the best ever, seriously. And Coco is such a gorgeous movie though.

  3. I love Tangled!! I remember watching it in cinemas when it came out and it was so funny and the besssst. Also surprising. Like back then I didn’t expect that kind of ending.? (So sweet and innocent was I. Ahh.) And YES BRAVE. A girl who doesn’t want a prince!! She wants magic and a bow!! EXCELLENT. And now I want to see Coco. ? I don’t watch a lot of Disney now, but I still do love it…I want to see Moana at some point too.?

    • Chiara says:

I saw Tangled in the cinema, too! It was a lot of fun and the ending was cuuuute. SO much about that movie is cute.

Brave is everything??? It’s just so good in so many different ways.

You should watch Coco! It is so good. I think you would like it cause there’s a bit of sarcasm in there, haha.

I need to watch Moana, as well!

  4. I haven’t seen a lot of the newer Disney movies because I’m a bit of a traditional animation snob, but I do love Tangled. I definitely love it more than Frozen, which I think is just okay and massively overhyped. I also liked Moana but the first time I watched it was during a flight and they changed her name to Vaiana, which is the European title, but the rest of the movie was the same so I’ll probably watch it again and pay attention to it properly. And I haven’t seen Big Hero Six or Coco yet but I reaaaalllly want to.

    • Chiara says:

I do love the old school animation of Disney films, for sure! But I can also appreciate the detail and realism (like hair and water, especially) in the newer films. They’re just different experiences!

Yeah, I liked Frozen, but it was not as great as I had been led to believe. I much prefer Brave, to be honest.

I haven’t seen Moana! I think it’s on Netflix now so I should watch it, haha. I hope you see Big Hero 6 and Coco soon! They are delightful.

  5. Amy Shaw says:

Big Hero 6 is so good, I agree! I still haven’t seen Coco! Sounds like I’ll have to check it out!

  6. I’ve been a Disney fan my whole life too!! All the animated classics and so many of the sing-a-long VHS tapes haha. I’ve honestly never grown out of it, I watch Disney movies all the time. Tangled is ABSOLUTELY one of my favorites of the newer bunch, it’s perfect for all the reasons you mentioned!! And if you haven’t seen it, the animated show is also excellent. Omg I was blown away by Coco, I didn’t expect to love it so much and it was beautiful is so many different ways.

Another favorite of mine is Princess and the Frog, I love it so much! Wreck It Ralph, Wall-E, and Meet The Robinsons are also so underrated. Definite faves. Awesome post, I loved reading it :)

    • Chiara says:

Yay for loving Disney! I always wished we had the other sing-a-long- VHS tapes, but we only ever had the one. And then when I was a lot older we found another one but it wasn’t quite the same D: Tangled is so lovely, and it really outdid the expectations I had of it because of the horrible posters, haha, I haven’t seen the animated show! Though i saw some GIFs for it when I was getting this post ready and it looks really cute. I wasn’t expecting Coco to be as beautiful as it was so I’m glad I watched it <3

I have only seen The Princess and the Frog out of the ones you mentioned! I obviously need to watch the others now. Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it :D

  7. Oh, I love Disney films. I still need to watch Big Hero 6 and Coco though. I’m a bit behind on some. LOL Tangled is a goodie – love the lantern scene. And Brave is so cute! I love that it focuses on a mother/daughter and the music is such fun.

    -Lauren

    • Chiara says:

Ah, you definitely need to watch Big Hero 6 and Coco! They are so good, Lauren. And so lovely <3 Big Hero 6 has a focus on brothers, and Coco is about family as a whole, but with a big focus on grandparents. I'm glad you like Brave and Tangled! I love them so much ^.^

  8. I actually haven’t seen Brave *GASP* I know, I know. BUT omg your other choices!! All of them made me cry. I adore them. <3 I saw Coco in cinema and I came out with a face like a puffer fish hahaha! I have a movie rec for you (it's not Disney) called Kubo and the Two Strings (if you haven't already seen it). It was made entirely in stop motion and it's freaking BEAUTIFUL. In the vein of these films with its heart and beauty. <3

    • Chiara says:

BEC, WHATTT? YOU NEED TO WATCH BRAVE OMG. IT’S SO GOOD AND BEAUTIFUL AND LOVELY. I think I would have been a mess if I saw Coco in the cinema, haha. So i feel for you! I have actually seen Kubo and it is one of my favourite films of all time. It was so beautiful and definitely does not receive the love it deserves <3

      • Kubo was SO UNDER HYPED AND IT IS AMAZING. I am SO SO glad you’ve seen it & LOVE IT! Yesyesyes I will get onto watching Brave. I always feel SO BAD that I haven’t seen it. *sweats*

        • Chiara says:

I have no idea why people don’t love Kubo more??? It’s honestly the BEST and most BEAUTIFUL. Please report back when you’ve watched Brave!!

  9. Tangled is definitely on my list of favorite newer Disney movies. I haven’t seen Coco yet, but I’m planning on it! It seems to have touched a lot of people, especially the Latino/a community! Brave is so underrated. Even I underrate it! Thinking back on it, it’s a wonderful film, but I don’t think I appreciated it enough when it came out (I was 13, and full on angst, so I wasn’t at the best time to watch a movie about a mother/daughter bond, haha!). Some of my other favorites are Wall-E, Up, Inside Out, and Finding Dory. I like Frozen, but the hype and constant talk really turned me off of it eventually. I’m really looking forward to Incredibles 2! It’s been way too long since I’ve seen the first one.

    • Chiara says:

Tangled is gorgeous <3 I really hope you get to watch Coco soon! It's so lovely. And I'm glad that it exists for Latinx kids to see themselves in <3

Brave is definitely underrated. And I'm sorry it easn't the right time for you to watch it when it first came out! I'm glad that you appreciate it now, though. It's so special.

I haven't seen Wall-E! But I really need to. It looks adorable. I really liked Inside Out, as well. There were a few tears when I watched it, haha.

Frozen was one I enjoyed but the hype was just too much for me. It made my expectations too high. I hope you like Incredibles 2!

  10. Lily says:

Ahhh this post is so beautiful, Chiara! :’) — Your entire blog, to be honest <3

I love Tangled, it's such a lovely movie, and Big Hero 6, as well! & I can't wait to watch Coco, hopefully I'll get around to it soon.

    • Chiara says:

Ah, thank you so much, Lily! <3

I'm glad you love those two, as well :D Since you do I highly recommend Coco. It's got the same kind of feel to it as Big Hero 6 in the way that it's got a focus on family. It's beautiful!

  11. Lindsi says:

I love Brave! I still need to watch Coco.

I don’t know about Disney, but as far as new movies go… Moana and Trolls. My son also watched Shrek for the first time the other day, but that’s not new. Well, it was new to him! We’re really excited for the new Incredibles movie, too.

    Lindsi @ Do You Dog-ear?

    • Chiara says:

Yay for loving Brave! I adore it. And I definitely recommend you watch Coco! It is very lovely in so many ways.

I haven’t watched Moana yet but it;s high on my list! Aw, that’s so cute. Did he like it? I watched it so much as a kid that I knew the script of Shrek, haha.

  12. I’ve been meaning to watch Coco ever since it came out – I don’t really know what happened! Life just got in the way I guess haha. Really looking forward to it though :)
Definitely agree with your favourites, especially Big Hero 6 ❤️ Other newer films that I absolutely love are Moana and Zootopia :)

    • Chiara says:

It is so good, Michelle! I really urge you to watch it. It wasn’t expecting much from it but I was blown away by how sentimental and lovely it was <3

I really liked Zootopia as well as Inside Out! I haven't watched Moana yet :O

  13. Kelly says:

Big Hero 6 is beautiful! I admit that I cried too. I haven’t seen a lot of the older Disney films, being older when most of them were released but absolutely loved the Pixar Films. It obviously started with Toy Story and continued through to Monsters Inc and Finding Nemo. I liked Frozen, mostly due to the soundtrack but prefer Tangled. I think overall it’s just a better film. I love animations that don’t rely on the handsome prince to rescue the princess / female star / or damsel. I haven’t seen Coco but seen it advertise on Foxtel recently so will have to hunt it down. It looks utterly beautiful! ♥♥♥

    • Chiara says:

Big Hero 6 was so delightful, and yet really packed an emotional punch. I never expected to cry but there I was, haha. I do love the Pixar ones! Toy Story was a staple for me growing up, and I really loved the sequel. I had a Jesse doll and a Bullseye plushie, haha. The Frozen soundtrack is really lovely. Even though it’s overplayed I love Let It Go :) Oh, I hope you watch Coco, Kell! It is so beautiful and lovely. I think you’ll like it :D <3

  14. I haven’t watched Coco yet, but Tangled is my favorite recent Disney movie! It’s just so magical and beautiful <3

  15. I love Tangled and Big Hero 6 and Coco! And Brave is a stunningly beautiful movie. (the landscape! her hair! the ACCENTS!) I like Frozen too, but it’s so overrated. Tangled is better. I also really liked Wreck-It Ralph actually, which was a pleasant surprise. I thought it looked really dumb but I ended up loving the characters and the concept was really well fleshed out. I never expected to love a movie about arcade games.
