5-reasons

Five Reasons To is basically my way of convincing you to love the same things I do. Because I love a lot of things for a lot of reasons. Hopefully my powers of persuasion will work their magic on you, and you can find new things to love!

Today, I am going to give you five reasons to:

Watch When Marnie Was There

1. The Animation

(source)

It would be remiss not to mention the animation of any Ghibli film when talking about them, to be honest. So it came as no surprise that the animation of When Marnie Was There was just as beautiful as all the other Ghibli films I have watched, perhaps even more so because of the setting. This film was set in a small seaside town, but there was also grass, forests, and marshlands. It was just divine.

2. The Green

(source)

There is just something about the greens that Ghibli uses in their films that straight up gets to me. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a Ghibli film and not commented on the greens. But the greens in When Marnie Was There were absolutely beautiful. There were so many different shades and hues. I was in love with the greens in this movie, which made it all the better that it had so much of it.

3. The Friendship

(source)

The friendship between Marnie and Anna was the most beautiful, poignant, innocent, and pure thing in the entire world. They were kind of polar opposites but their friendship worked so well. It was so lovely to see two girls form such an incredible bond on screen with nothing coming between them.

4. The Character Development

(source)

Anna, the main character, is such a different person when the movie starts and when it ends. She goes through such a subtle yet noticeable development that you hardly see it happening but at the same time you really do. This girl is harbouring so much emotional turmoil and throughout the movie she confronts this in both little and big ways. Seeing her change, and become happier, was absolutely one of the highlights of this film.

5. The Story

(source)

There is something so incredibly special about the story of When Marnie Was There. I honestly can’t say too much because I loved going into this movie without knowing a thing about it and I’ll keep it that way for anyone who hasn’t seen it. Just know that it is beautiful and poignant and touching. It’s somewhat of a simple movie but I think that’s where the bulk of its beauty lies. This is, at its heart, a story about life changing friendships and I think we all need a story like that.

So these are five reasons for you to watch When Marnie Was There! I could not have loved this movie any more than I did. Have you seen it? Have I convinced you to give it a go?

I watched this movie last year but I forgot what it was all about (I blame my horrible memory these days ugh) but I remember how it made me feel after watching it and that it was a lovely and satisfying movie.

  3. I loved When Marnie Was There, it has such a beautiful story that really leaves an impression on you. I agree with all of your points. I didn’t really know much about it either before watching it so I was really surprised at how much I loved it. It’s definitely a film I’d rewatch over and over again. :)

I’m so glad you love it, too, Kyla! I think going into it without expectations is best. That way I had no idea what to expect, which made it even more special. I’m definitely going to rewatch it, as well!

  4. I’ve been meaning to watch this! I need to watch more Ghibli movies, as I claim to love them but have barely seen any of them haha. This sounds so lovely, you definitely convinced me :)

  5. !!! I love ALL Studio Ghibli films. I will admit, I had no idea this had even come out yet! I feel ashamed. I must go see it immediately. I’m glad to hear such positive things about it, too. It’s hard to imagine a world without Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata participating.

I have been a big Studio Ghibli fan for as long as I can remember! I think this one came out around 2014? I’m not sure why it took me so long to get to it. And I urge you to watch it, Jackie! It’s so, so beautiful. It’s sad that Studio Ghibli closed, but Studio Ponoc has many of the same creators! They released a movie called Mary and the Witch’s Flower, which looks beautiful.

  6. Valerie says:

This was such a great movie! Though it isn’t my top Ghibli film, I definitely appreciated the animation, AND THE FRIENDSHIP.

Now you’re making me want to rewatch all my favorite anime movies :D
