5-reasons

Five Reasons To is basically my way of convincing you to love the same things I do. Because I love a lot of things for a lot of reasons. Hopefully my powers of persuasion will work their magic on you, and you can find new things to love!

Today, I am going to give you five reasons to:

Watch Studio Ghibli

1. They’re Emotional AF

Seriously. I mean, the messages behind some of these movies are ridiculously deep and emotional. For example: Princess Mononoke is all about the environment (which is why it remains my favourite), Howl’s Moving Castle is about seeing what lies underneath, and Spirited Away has so many messages it’s hard to pick just one. These movies are incredibly emotional, but they weave it into the storyline without making it feel like they’re shoving it in your face.

2. They’re Also Light-hearted

Even though a lot of Ghibli movies have deep and meaningful messages, there are light and fluffy ones, too. Of these my favourites are Whisper of the Heart which is a hate-to-love story about a writer girl who falls in love with a violin maker and it is PRECIOUS, and Arrietty which is just beautiful and whimsical and *dreamy sigh*

3. The Animation

Is freaking BEAUTIFUL, I tell you. Seriously. No matter how many times I watch Ghibli movies, I always marvel at how pretty everything is. Especially the scenery. Like in Princess Mononoke and Howl’s. They’ll blow you away.

4. They’re Like Disney … For Adults

Just because these movies are animated, does not mean that they are for kids. I mean, there’s no cheesy (albeit somewhat cute) songs or that slapstick comedy shit that annoys the hell out of me. These are just … animated movies. Period.

5. Jiji

Seriously, Jiji is a reason in himself to watch Ghibli movies, but in reality this point is more like “the cute as shit creatures” because there are so many. Like in Spirited Away there are the adorable little soot things that eat sugar candies, in Howl’s there’s Calcifer, in Princess Mononoke there’s the adorable tree sprites. There are just adorable creatures in EVERY single Ghibli movie, and they’re literally the best.

So these are five reasons for you to watch Studio Ghibli! I hope I have convinced you because they are THE BEST.

Ta ta for now,

I only have watched Spirited Away and I LOVED it. The animation is so beautiful and the storyline itself is so heartwarming. I watched it online, but I forgot the link so I’ve been looking for a website to watch the other movies :)

  2. I recently saw my first Ghibli movie (Howl’s moving castle) and I loooooved the art. I’m definitely going to watch another movie, I have my eyes set on Princess Monoke.

  3. GURL I am almost finished with my Studio Ghibli marathon I started back in October!!! Just got Princess Kaguya and When Marnie Was There to watch before my blog explodes with special posts all about Studio Ghibli!!! So glad you love the films, too. Jiji is the best sidekick, but I love the little Totoros and Tato the fox squirrel as well. Ghibli’s films are truly amazing, much better than most movies that exist in the world, and you’re right, they’re not just “kids” movies. I also love the incredibly strong heroines featured in them (Chihiro, Sophie, and Nausicaa being my favorites), and the important, often heavy and saddening themes they touch on. My favorite of them all is Princess Mononoke, but Howl’s Moving Castle is #2, and then my next favorites are Nausicaa, Porco Rosso, and Whisper of the Heart not in any particular order. Gah–I’ll stop fangirling now. :D <3

I LOVED your Ghibli posts, Mallory :D I’m glad there’s another Ghibli lover in the book blogging community!

All the little sidekicks are amazing. But I am very fond of Jiji because he’s a cat, and generally just adorable.

Oh yes! The heroines are AWESOME. Always doing it for themselves, which is awesome.

We share favourites :D There should be more love for Whisper of the Heart <3

  4. STUDIO GHIBLI IS AMAZING! I haven’t seen that many but the ones I have seen are gorgeous and such beautiful stories

  5. Shannelle says:

You had me at the “hate to love story” part. I love watching and reading those kinds of stories, and I probably should watch some of these movies at some point.

  6. So, a friend of mine dragged me over to her house this past weekend to watch my first Ghibli film – Spirited Away – and oh goodness, I am so hooked. The animation is simply gorgeous, and you’re right, there are endless complexities in the themes. (Not to mention those little soot things!! I would buy the hell out of a stuffed animal of them, just saying.) I am so looking forward to binge-watching the rest – they sound simply lovely. xx

    • Chiara says:

Spirited Away was my first Ghibli, as well! And I have to say it is the perfect one to start with. OMG I think there are soft toys of those little soot creatures on the internet somewhere!

I would love to know what you think of the others, lovely <3

  7. Romi says:

Okay, so this is my last comment on your blog until next year. *sobs uncontrollably* I’m terribly sad, but so happy I’ve read this post as the last. It is a complete and utter yes from me, for all your points, although my love for Cal is slightly bigger than for Jiji. You know, some of them do have pretty funky end songs, though- like The Cat Returns. And Ponyo. But… I love them and don’t even care. There’s just something entirely unique and distinct about Ghibli films, and I can’t pinpoint it. They all have this incredible, dazzling animation, and the layers to their plots and characters and all of it is gorgeous, but they just get me. In the way their magic is so natural and real, and I am just completely swept away.

I should probably watch Princess Mononnoke, yes?

    • Chiara says:

And look at me, I’m still replying to them, THREE MONTHS IN. Because I am terrible at comments, as I have told you before ;D

Ah, Calcifer is lovely but Jiji is A CAT. And his face is just too freaking adorable.

Some of them aren’t quite as special as the others, but overall Ghibli has movies down to an art. Figuratively and literally <3

Uhm, yes. How are we friends, again? *shakes head*

  8. MAY ALL YOUR BACON BURN!!!!
I freaking love Calcifer. He is my fave. I haven’t seen all the Ghibli movies, but I have seen (and LOVED) ‘My Neighbor Totoro’, ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ and ‘Ponyo’! I for sure need to get a lsit of all of them and just binge-watch one weekend <3
