Mini Reviews Volume #5

What: Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan
Who: HarperCollins Publishers

How: Borrowed from library.

Just another reason why David Levithan is the male counterpart of my favourite author (that sounds totally weird, but you get what I mean). Boy Meets Boy is the cutest, fluffiest, most adorable book ever. I am completely in love with it.
I am so in love with the almost eutopian-esque feel of this book where the town is so accepting of sexuality and where the football captain is a crossdresser. I freaking adored it 100%. And I wish life could be more like this. Who knows … maybe one day (hopefully).
Paul is a silly, silly boy and I wanted to smack (lovingly) some sense into him, but then I also kind of understood his actions. Who hasn’t wanted an ex to suddenly realise that they are in fact in love with you? It would be pretty hard just to turn away cold-hearted. But I’m glad he cleaned up his act because NOAH. NOOOAAAAAHHH. Asdfghjkl. Noah is fab and darling and I heart him with all my soul.
Also, Paul, take me. Forget about Joni. I’ll be your BFF FOREVS.

So much love for this book. So much love.
Love #1: Phyre falls for a girl, after only falling for guys before. Besides one sentence where she’s like: since when do I like girls??? She just accepts it. She doesn’t freak out over liking Mia, and she just goes with it. *round of applause*
Love #2: You. I loved You. I love that we don’t know if You is a boy or a girl and that it doesn’t even matter. You is the most supportive and adorable and forgiving and just yes. I adored You and how they tried so hard to make Phyre realise how much they cared for them when Phyre was being so blind.
Love #3: The way it’s written. Like a screenplay! Which I thought I would hate at first, but I absolutely freaking loved it. It was so awesome to just read dialogue and action without all that fluff.
Between You & Me was fantabulous. Go, read, now!
What: Suicide Watch by Kelley York
Who: N/A

I think the aspect of this book that I liked the best was the characters and how completely flawed they were. it was heartbreaking and also very real.
We have Vincent, our main character, who is trying to cope with his foster mother dying, and not doing a very good job of it. We have Casper, who is dying from cancer. We have Adam, who doesn’t have anyone who cares about him. They’re all so tortured, but somehow they find each other and they’re all the better for it.
I think one thing that I wasn’t entirely sure about was Suicide Watch. It was an incredibly creepy storyline, but I don’t feel like it was fleshed out enough to really bring that creep factor into the novel. I mean, I’m pretty sure Harbinger killed Joey, but hey.
I thought the ending was very sweet, and I loved how Vincent’s homosexuality was such a non-issue. It was fabulous.

I am probably the only person on this planet who hasn’t read something by David Levithan. *hides* I’ve been meaning to read Two Boys Kissing because I know so many people loved that book, along with Boy Meets Boy, but I’m VERY lazy and quick to make up excuses. I am also more a fan of fantasy and science fiction and so I tend to read VERY few contemporaries. BUT, because you highly recommend and love David Levithan, I shall give both books a try as soon as possible. <3
Between You & Me sounds so interesting! I've noticed a lack of girl/girl YA fiction, but maybe that's just me. *shrug*
Suicide Watch sounds interesting, and I'll probably think about giving it a try, but the idea of a suicide watch is a bit…creepy? I'm not sure how to put that. I'll look more into it!
You need to! I am book pushing on you right now. Although my favourite of his so far is THE REALM OF POSSIBILITY to definitely read that one first. But BOY MEETS BOY is so cute and fluffy and adorable, if you are in the mood for one of those!
Yeah girl/girl is even rarer than boy/boy, and this one was SO GOOD. I love it.
SUICIDE WATCH *is* a bit creepy, but it doesn’t really focus on that part, more of the friendships made between the members. Let me know if you do read it :D
I’ve been wanting to read David Levithan for a while now, so I’m excited to find Boy Meets Boy. Between You and Me sounds interesting too, but I’m not sure about the whole ‘screenplay’ thing.
Thanks for sharing the reviews!
Beth x
Boy Meets Boy is incredibly unique because the town it’s set in is very eutopian!
I wasn’t sure about the screenplay set out of Between You & Me but it actually worked REALLY WELL.
Thanks, Beth :D
I haven’t read Boy Meets Boy yet, but it does sounds interesting, the cover is cute lol :) I’m going to check it out for myself now, great mini reviews!
Boy Meets Boy is lovely, and I really do love the cover :D
Thanks, Benish!
Ahhh Boy Meets Boy! Have you read Two Boys Kissing? It’s supposedly a companion novel but I read it without reading Boy Meets Boy and loved it.
I have read Two Boys Kissing and I loved it! I didn’t realise it was a companion novel, though :O
