searching for skyWhat: Searching for Sky by Jillian Cantor

Who : Bloomsbury Childrens

When: July 3rd 2014

How: A copy of this novel was provided by Bloomsbury Australia in exchange an honest review.

River means everything to Sky. They have lived alone together on Island for as long as they can remember. The two of them hunt for food, wash in Falls and curl up together in Shelter. Their life is simple and safe. Until River sees a boat . . .

Across Ocean is California, a place where nothing makes sense to Sky. She is separated from River and taken to live with a grandmother she doesn’t know. Lost and heartbroken, Sky searches for him so they can return to Island, only to find out that their paradise wasn’t as perfect as she thought, and everything she’s ever known and loved may have been a lie.

A gripping and beautifully told story of love and survival in a hostile world – ours.

3.5B

This book made me very passionate. For some very not-so-great reasons.

So the main premise of Searching for Sky is that Sky and River have lived on a deserted island their whole life, and then are found my modern day people who bring them to California in order for them to have a ‘normal’ life.

I was about 60% or so into this novel and adoring it. I loved Sky’s internal monologue, and I loved her relationship with River, and I loved River (italics needed).

The storyline was fantastic. A girl and boy brought to the modern day world. I think this novel has been called a ‘reverse dystopia’. I don’t necessarily agree with that, but it was an interesting view of our world.

I knew things were going to go downhill when River says that he doesn’t want to see Sky any more (this happens relatively early on, but in my persistent way I convinced myself that everything was going to turn out all right and they would end up together). Because, really, they have spent every minute of every day together for their entire lives. He isn’t just going to randomly dump her, especially now that they’re in our terrifying world. But like I said, persistence on my behalf and belief in the happily ever after.

It was interesting to see how Sky adjusted. Although I think her speech changed a little too quickly to be entirely believable. My favourite part was when the teacher asked her to write her name and she drew a circle. I don’t know why, but I thought it was beautiful.

Re-enter River.

Okay, I really, really do not know how I am going to finish this review without being spoilery as heck.

River comes back, and I was all: YES, I was right! But I wasn’t, not really. Because Sky starts to notice that River still talks and acts the way they did on Island (their deserted island). There’s this one scene, and it had me fuming. River goes and gets some strawberries for himself and Sky, and then when Sky eats it she thinks along the lines of: grandmother told me how dangerous it is to eat fruit without washing it first.

No. NO. N O. She would not think that! She had only been living in the modern world few a month or so and then she’s suddenly worried about washing fruit before eating it?! *screams* SHE WAS EATING FLOWERS ON ISLAND, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. FLOWERS. And then she judges River for getting them food to eat, and I just. I couldn’t.

The ending. *flips desk* I just. I don’t presume to know what the author was thinking, but it felt like a lazy ending to me. I felt like the ending was only there for “impact”, and that it would be too hard to figure out how to make everything right, so the easy road was taken. It just left me completely unsatisfied with the entire novel. Why? Why make me believe in a story only to just completely write it off a few pages before the end? This is essentially a contemporary novel and contemporaries end openly all the time – so why would that tie need to be made? Why would a chance not be given to the future that could have happened? That’s why contemporaries are open ended! For possibility!

And then this awful ending is pretty much this one character’s fault, and if I were Sky I would have been absolutely livid but she gets over it in a few days. *shakes fists* How? How could she have forgiven that character after everything that had happened? It was practically this character’s fault that the ending happened! The character was so blind and stupid and selfish, I actually could not believe it. There was lip curling every time they were on the page (and that was BEFORE the ending).

So there you go. I was very passionate about Searching for Sky. It was on its way to nestling itself deep in the heart of my favourites shelf, but no. That ending just had to go and happen, didn’t it?

  1. I have this for review but I’ve just been completely uninspired to pick it up. *sigh* I NEED to! It doesn’t sound half bad. ;) I’m just finishing City of Ashes and then I’m eating it. Done deal. I like that you’re so passionate about it. Makes me so curious! x)

I was interested BEFORE I got it sent to me for review, haha. I just loved the sound of it.

Ooo you won’t be able to not eat City of Glass, though. It’s my favourite TMI book ^.^

I am very passionate about it! I raged at my mum about it, haha XD

I’m sorry if the ending kind of ruined the book for you, I mean from your rating it’s clear that you still liked it but the fact that it was almost in your favorite shelf then missed because of the last half is pretty disappointing because it’s obvious that the book started really well. I know a lot of readers ended up loving this book, but it’s also great to read reviews like yours so when I finally pick this up (which I don’t think will be anytime soon) I will keep the negative points you mentioned in mind and adjust my expectations. Awesome review! :)

    • Chiara says:

The book started of quite amazing, in my opinion. I was loving pretty much every aspect of it. Even though the ending infuriated me, it was still a good book.

Reading a variety of reviews is always good in my opinion!

      Thanks, Amir :)

  3. I TOTALLY agree with you Chiara! I really enjoyed it for that first bit too, and it sounds like it started to go a bit downhill for both of us at the same scene. And yes! The ending was SUCH a let down. It felt really rushed, and I never really felt the emotions the author wanted me to feel, you know?

Regardless though, it was still a decent and enjoyable book, like you mentioned. If only a few things would have been cleaned up a bit, it could have been a favorite! Thanks for sharing, and, as always, BRILLIANT review! <3

    • Chiara says:

Most people think the ending was emotional and poignant, but I just CAN’T feel that way. Like you, I really felt like it was a let down. Which is a shame because I had been enjoying it so much before that.

I definitely was a good book, and I liked its uniqueness! If only the ending hadn’t happened, haha.

      Thank you, Zoe! ^.^

  4. LOL. I guess I should be glad I never downloaded it from Netgalley. It’s obvious this book made you really rage-y, so I’m sure that I would’ve been the same. It’s a shame because it seems that at first you were really enjoying it.

    • Chiara says:

Haha, yeah I got a bit rage-y, didn’t I? XD I feel sorry for my mum who had to listen to me rant about it for a while, haha.

It was a shame! I was really loving its unique story but that ending – just no. D:

  5. I’m about to read this next and I’m terrified about the ending. But I’m going to have to brace myself! I was to scared to read the whole review but thank you for it! I’ve seen mixed reviews so I didn’t really know what to think of it.

    • Chiara says:

Haha, at least you have some kind of warning! It was just so unexpected D:

Yeah, I think this is one of those books where you think the ending is poignant or emotional or that it’s rage-worthy (I was obviously the latter, haha). I will definitely keep an eye out for your review :D

  6. Kelly says:

THIS. Is exactly how I felt. Why *shakes first WHHHY! It fell apart much earlier for me though, when they had left the island. Sky turned into a tantrum throwing child, when you would have though she would have been far too scared to. River needed his own point of view, he was the one redeeming point for me, and look how that turned out *rages along with you*

    • Chiara says:

I was able to handle Sky after she left the island because she had never interacted socially with anyone except her family. And I imagine it would have been so hard for her to adjust. Although sometimes she did annoy me, too.

River definitely needed his own point of view. Everything was way too open and unanswered when it came to me.

And yes, the ending was awful!
