thoughts

Books for Thought is where I post a discussion topic related to books, reading, writing, or something related to one of the three. I hope you’ll join in, and discuss today’s topic of

why you receive comments from me on old posts

As some of you may have noticed, you will, from time to time, receive comments from me on months-old posts of yours. From October, or even earlier in some cases. Now, I don’t presume to know what you’re thinking, but if I received a comment on a months-old post, my first thought would probably be along the lines of: why are you commenting on such an old post?

Well, I am here to tell you why you may receive a comment from me on ye olde post.

I don’t want to talk too much about the act of commenting itself, as I have a few ideas for discussion posts related to commenting, but I will say this. I go through phases when it comes to commenting. One week I may comment on every post that I open because I want to share the love, and have a conversation with a blogger. That’s what blogging is about, right? I’m not going to be a bystander in the book blogging community, no way no how!

But then, on another week, I cannot muster up any desire to comment. I may have thoughts on the post, and might even want to share those thoughts, but I just cannot bring myself to apply the brainpower necessary to leave a thoughtful comment. It just doesn’t happen, and I become that bystander that I vowed never to be the previous week.

And then I visit a blog, and read a post. I really like the post. I am motivated to comment, I write a huge essay of a comment, I publish it – I am BACK.

Whilst on this blog that has brought back my inner commenter, I realise that I have been laxing in the commenting department for x amount of time. I may have missed out on really good posts. I may have thoughts on those posts. I want to comment on those posts. So, I go back in said blog’s archive, and drag out all the posts that I am interested in commenting on. And then I do just that – comment on them. No matter that this discussion post was published back in October – I want to comment on it! I want to comment on ALL THE POSTS.

all the things

And then I do.

What about you – do you have off and on days for commenting? Do you ever raid someone’s archive and comment on all the things? Let me know in the comment section below!

Sometimes…I just can’t think of anything that would actually add to the blog. lol

  2. Jen Sincula says:

I have a hard time remembering to reply to comments, which may be the reason why I don’t do much of it. I’m working on that though!

  3. Kayla says:

It’s always interesting to me thinking about how someone’s come across a post of mine so long after it was published. I love getting comments but I definitely have my days where I must comment on ALL THE POSTS! and others where the effort can’t seem to be made. xD

  4. I do have phases of commenting! But I don’t think I’ve ever gone back to comment on older posts. I don’t have time for that :( I wish I did… Also wish I could come up with nice comments for every post I read.

    • It usually just happens when I come across a blog that I haven’t commented on much before, or one that I really love and may not have commented on when I read their post when it was originally published.
I wish I had something meaningful to say on every post read, but that’s not possible! D:

  5. I go through this all the time! Usually it just depends on how busy my day was – if I’m tired, I can’t find the energy to type out all my thoughts. Most of the time, I can’t even make the thoughts! But on the days that I’m not tired, I love commenting – especially when it’s a really thought provoking discussion or a well written review.

  6. I generally don’t go looking for old posts when I visit blogs, but many of us tweet out links to our old posts. Whenever I visit one of those I always hesitate to comment because it’s old. How silly! The blogger wouldn’t be tweeting old links if she didn’t want people to visit her blog (and presumably she likes comments).

  7. Lisa says:

I love all your GIFs. Haha. I’m so awful at commenting. I have a really hard time keeping up with blogs in general, so unless I see the post randomly and decide to comment… well… it might never happen. I see nothing wrong with commenting on old posts though. I do occasionally too. I’ve never considered posts closed for business when they get old. They’re just old. *shrugs* :D

  8. Yes! Absolutely! I’ll sometimes be in the mood to write paragraph upon paragraph in response to an awesome post. And then sometimes, the post will be amazing, but my commenting radar will be on ‘meh’. But then I get back into the commenting spirit and go crazy and, like you said, comment on every post I read :D

I don’t know if I go back to posts I’ve read to comment… But I do sometimes raid archives and go to a blogger’s first posts, just to see what they were up to back then, haha!

    • You understand me! :D Haha.

There are weird instances where I find posts that I never saw, because sometimes my reader or Bloglovin can be dodgy and I’ll miss the posts entirely. But then there may be posts I’ve read before but didn’t have any thoughts on but that I have thoughts on when I visit them for a second time.

I’ve never looked at blogs’ earlier posts! I may do that, haha. Although my blog was very different in the beginning! D:

I totally do the same thing! Especially if it’s a new blog I’ve found and I like – I’ll go back in the archive to find reviews of books I’ve read or posts that sound interesting and read and comment :) I’m so glad it’s not just me because sometimes I feel a little silly if it’s an old post, but if it’s an interesting post and I have thoughts – I like sharing. Like you said, that conversation is what so much of the book blogging community is all about.

But then I also really love when people comment on old posts of mine. Just because I wrote it months ago doesn’t change that it’s new to them and if they have thoughts on whatever I said I totally want to hear it!

    • I sometimes do it with new blogs that I follow, as well. Because if I’ve only just followed them, there are HEAPS of posts that I would have missed out on before I followed them!
Don’t feel silly! And you know you’re not alone now :D I thought maybe that the blogger would wonder why they got a handful of comments from me on older posts, but then I thought: I’m happy with any comment, so I’m sure they are as well!

I’ve never received a comment on an older post of mine! But I love what you said about it – just because it was written a while ago doesn’t mean it is closed to discussion!

  10. Kelly says:

First, you found the PERFECT gifs to compliment this post! Haha

I definitely go through phases where I can’t think of anything to say, so I just mark posts as read and move on. But then I feel guilty – I mean, I must have missed some good stuff right? So I’ll go back and see that there were a few posts that interested me. But usually I recognize that I’m not in a commenting mood and close my reader, vowing to return when I’m in a better commenting mood.

I love when someone finds an old post of mine and feels the need to comment – old posts need love too! It’s why I love the Tweet Old Post plugin – I find a lot of good oldies that way :)

    • :D :D

Yes, I do that, as well. Or at least I bookmark the posts that I know I will have thoughts on when I am back in commenting mode.

I’m pretty sure you’re one of the people that I manically commented on old posts of! I think I may need tog et that plug-in – I’ve found awesome older blog posts on other blogs that way!

  11. Charleen says:

I know what you mean about going through phases. Sometimes I just don’t have it in me. I don’t think I’ve ever gone searching for old posts to comment on, though if I’m in a mood like that, I might bookmark a specific post to come back to later, once I get my mojo back.

But I typically don’t comment on posts that are over a month old. I don’t know why, since I love getting comments on posts no matter when they were written. It still just feels awkward.

    • I just get on a roll, and feel like commenting. Especially if it’s a blog that posts great discussions. I am almost always commenting on discussions.

I was worried when I first started doing it, but then I realised I would be uber happy if someone raided my discussion posts, so maybe other bloggers feel that way, too!

  12. Cee says:

I frequently have days where I read a post and don’t feel like commenting at that instance (but I do plan to later). Getting distracted is something that happens to me frequently. Lol. I may have thoughts on the post…but I just cannot bring myself to apply the brainpower necessary to leave a thoughtful comment. Perfectly said! This is me! Usually it’s late in the night when I want to comment, but I know I won’t make any sense since I’m tired. I want to contribute to the discussion in a coherent manner.

I never comment on really old posts just because I feel weird that it’s taken me sooo long to comment, plus I feel like it’s drawing a lot of attention to myself, which I don’t really like (because I’m a weirdo. ;D).

  13. Hahaha loved this post. I never really comment on MONTHS-old posts, but there have definitely been times where I’m really behind on commenting and, trying to catch up, will go back and comment on posts that are a week or two old. I figure that all comments are good! It doesn’t really matter how old the post is….right???

  14. If I see a post that interests me and I feel like I have something to say, I will comment on it no matter when it was posted, haha. I hope if someone new to my blog comes across an old post and they feel like they have something to add, I hope they will take the time to comment on it as well. Comment on!

  15. Thanks for shedding some light on how you comment Chiara, everyone is different. Some weeks I am really good, keeping up with my favourite blogs every single time they post but other weeks I only get around to reading their latest ones. But hey, we appreciate the posts that you do comment on!

  16. When I get a comment, I actually don’t mind if it’s on a new or very old posts. I think it’s a great feeling when someone takes the time to go back in your content to comment more! I do it myself too when I find a new blog. I comment quite actively, so most of the times I’m up to date when it comes to posts from the blogs I follow :) But lately I’ve been a bit of a slacker and I had to go back to posts from January. So, that can be counted as old in some eyes.

  17. I totally fall behind on comments sometimes so I comment late. I’m not sure if I have ever commented a month late though. :))

  18. DoingDewey says:

I definitely have on and off days for commenting, but for the most part, I comment within a few days or not at all. The only exception is when I’m going to review a book in the next few weeks. Then I’ll save a post in my reader until I’ve written my review and then go back and comment :)

    • Chiara says:

I like to comment on a post after one of my off days because I don’t feel like I’m being fair to all the bloggers.
I cannot say that I do that! I usually just steer clear of reviews for books I haven’t read and then read new reviews after I have read the book.

  19. Brea Johnson says:

    Well, this is awkward…
That’s basically what I’m doing right now. Except it’s because I’ve missed way to much on my little holiday!

    P.S. Expect many more comments.

  20. Anya says:

I’m a fan of “related post” hopping where I’ll comment on a recent discussion/review, see another one that looks interesting in the related posts widget or where ever, and continue on like that until I run out ;-). I love this though, discussion posts especially are generally still relevant and interesting!

  21. Ehehe. It isn’t weird to receive comments on your earlier posts, right? When I’m blogwalking in a blog I usually skim until I find a post that I’m most interested in then I’ll comment in that post ;)
Btw that first gif made me giggle so much ahaha
