5-reasons

Five Reasons To is basically my way of convincing you to love the same things I do. Because I love a lot of things for a lot of reasons. Hopefully my powers of persuasion will work their magic on you, and you can find new things to love!

Today, I am going to give you five reasons to:

Supergirl

1. It’s Cute!!!

(source)

I actually tried watching Supergirl back when the first season came out on DVD and I couldn’t handle it because I thought it was cheesy. SHAME on 2016!Chiara for not seeing Supergirl for the wholesome content that it is. Supergirl is cute not cheesy. Or at least the cheesiness is cute and not just outright cheesy. Kara is one of the most adorable protagonists of a show ever and I just love that. I love that she’s so sweet. It’s actually pretty beautiful.

2. It’s Queer

(source)

Kara’s sister, Alex, is gay and just YES for one of the main characters in a superhero show being queer. And totally badass but at the same time very in tune with her feelings. Whenever Alex cries I cry. No matter what she’s crying about. She just has that kind of face. Also, I just started season four and there’s a trans girl character played by a trans girl actress. BLESS.

3. Found Family

(source)

The entire premise of this show is based around found family since Kara was adopted at thirteen when she crashed to Earth. But it’s also about finding friends who end up being your family, and they actually refer to themselves as family and not just friends and MY HEART. The gif above is of Kara and her damn soulmate because apparently no one wants to make gifs of this amazing show? Shame.

4. It’s About a Girl

(source)

Let’s be real, the superhero market is still very dude-saturated and it’s so damn refreshing to watch a show about a superhero who’s a girl. I think we need more of them. I think we need ALL OF THEM. Also imagine me saying that with the ferocity of Kara’s scream in that gif right above.

5. It Parallels Real Life

(source)

Even though Supergirl is set in a fictional city on a fictional Earth it still draws a lot of parallels to real life. The writers obviously hate Donald Trump and I live for all the subtle and not-so-subtle digs at him throughout the seasons. Also, they tackle real life issues like racism and police brutality, as well. And it’s pretty damn feminist, too. So as much as Supergirl is cute, it’s also using its platform to open people’s eyes to things they might not have bothered to see before.

So these are five reasons for you to watch Supergirl! I’m so glad I gave this show another shot because it’s one of my favourites now. Have you seen it? Have I convinced you to give it a go?

Ta ta for now,

  1. I LOVE SUPERGIRL!!!!!!! Shane even likes it.
I was hooked right from the start. It was so refreshing. And it just keeps getting better and better I think! I love that it tackles real issues head on.
I love that it gives us Kara Zor-El, Alex Danvers and Nia Nal (the trans character you spoke of) – three kick ass female characters, who are well rounded and deserving of all the fandoms in the world. I cheered out loud when Alex came out. I cheered out loud when we were introduced to Nia <3 I love the writers and producers of this show, fantastic stuff!!

      YAY!

There is honestly so much to love about this show, but the leading ladies are definitely the best part (though I love Brainy too <3). I've been finding the newest season a little hard to watch because of the parallels with real world racism but I think it's awesome that the show brings real world issues to light by veiling them in fictional settings!
