books-for-life

Books for Life is where I share bookish lists, recommendations, and favourites. You can also catch me talking about non-bookish things here, as well as my life outside of blogging. Today I’m talking about…

hyped books i bought and never read

As much as I bemoan it… I am not immune to the hype. Sometimes, the hype gets to me and I end up purchasing a book because everyone has told me how amazing it is, and the glowing five star reviews are inescapable, and the premise sounds interesting. But, just because I buy these hyped books doesn’t mean I’ll ever get around to reading them *laughter that turns into tears* Because I thrive on self loathing I thought I’d share but a few popular books that I have bought, and have been sitting on my shelf ever since. Here we go…

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

To be honest, I don’t even know how I have escaped reading this book for so long. I got it for Christmas the year it came out – I specifically asked for it because I adore Shadow and Bone. But here we are… still unread. I think the hype fear has gotten to me now. What if I don’t love this gang of thieves as much as everyone else? DOOM.

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

I bought the box set of this trilogy when Cassandra Clare came to Brisbane in 2015. I am a fan of TMI so when I found out about this series (well before I bought it) I thought it would be right up my alley because historical paranormal! Alas, still unread. Even though I read that awful Shadowhunter Academy book *shudders*

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenn Han

A few times in my early blogging years I did this thing where you were assigned this person, and they had three shelves on GR and you got to buy them one off each shelf (and they did the same for you). Or something like that, it was a long time ago. I think the last time I did this was 2014? So that’s how long I’ve had this book *heavy breathing* I love the cover so, so much. I think that’s why I put it on the wishlist. And now that I’ve heard almost non-stop good things about it I’m more keen to read it. And the series is completed, too, which is a bonus.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Can you believe I actually preordered this way back when? Booktopia had this whole “it’s signed by both authors!” thing going on, which they have done for all the books in this series. In fact… I have preordered all three books in this trilogy because of it. And I still haven’t even bothered to read the first one, hahaha.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

I think this book appeared on my bookish radar almost as soon as I started blogging. I had never heard of it before but I really liked the sound of it and I couldn’t escape the high praise from fellow bloggers and friends. So when I found a copy at one of those $5 bookstores that pop up every now and again (where have you gone, beautiful things?) I couldn’t resist. Actually, a year or two ago I picked up another copy at a secondhand book fair because it was bigger. I am unstoppable.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

This, too, was purchased at one of those $5 stores. As well as the sequel. IN HARDBACK. FOR FIVE DOLLARS. And yet they remain unread. I think my desire to read the books decreased after seeing the movie. I know it shouldn’t but this happens to me a lot. I’m kind of like: well, I know what happens now I don’t need to read the book. I feel shame. I do.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

Since Fangirl was one of my favourite books, I preordered the shit out of Carry On when I realised it was going to be A Thing. For some reason I still haven’t picked it up.

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

I bought this as an ebook when it was on sale for $5 (obviously, if something is $5 I cannot resist it *upside down smiling emoji*). Then I traded for the hardback last year because I do prefer reading physical books. That didn’t make me read it any faster, though, hahaha.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

DON’T YELL AT ME. I KNOW I AM BEHIND, OKAY? LEAVE ME BE. I TOLD YOU THIS POST WAS AN EXERCISE IN SELF LOATHING.

Are you in the same situation I’m in? Do you have any popular books you’ve bought but never read?

    what is wrong with you

  2. OKAY BUT I HAVE TO YELL AT YOU A LITTLE BIT OKAY?? Because there are some absolute must reads on your list. Six of Crows, Illuminae and The Hate U Give being three of them. AND CARRY ON. You must read that one too. Don’t let the hype of any of them get to you please and just try them.

  3. This post is amazing!!
There are so many books I buy because there is SO MUCH hype and they are still sitting on my bookshelf, unread. woops.
We have 3 the same, Carry On, To All The Boy’s I’ve Loved Before & Miss Peregrine are all books I’ve brought because people have raved about them / they are super popular and I haven’t picked up any of them xD
I’m hoping to get to all of them this year but you never know :’)

I still haven’t read Six of Crows either! I got mine at a Q&A event with Leigh Bardugo and I got it signed and personalised by her, but I still haven’t read it yet because I haven’t read Ruin and Rising, and I wanted to finish the Grisha trilogy before SOC. And I haven’t read Illuminae either but I’m DYING to. I need that book in my life so badly and I keep putting it off because I suck.

  5. Ama says:

    I find this so true!

  6. I straight up gasped at most of these. WHAT ARE YOU DOING???? Go read Six of Crows, damn it’s one of my fav YAs ever! And Kaz Brekker is just……I’ll hold in my feels, and just urge you to read the book fast!
Ember is such a gem. I slept on it for a whole year until I got an ARC of the sequel, and just read the series for the sake of it. Best decision ever.
And dude Night Circus is a must! One of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read. Period!

  7. Honestly, I’ve never been interested in The Night Circus. It just doesn’t sound like something I’d enjoy, based on various reviews I’ve seen. I DO own The Hate U Give and Carry On though, and I really need to read them. haha I’m pretty sure I’ll love them – I’m behind on most books that I buy for myself though.

I’ve read the first Miss Peregrine book and I thought it was good (still never saw the movie) but I don’t really care to continue the series.

I do, however, love Illuminae and Gemina and I want to read those again before the third one as it’s been awhile and there are so many details! Plus, they read fairly quick so re-reading them shouldn’t take too long.

Oh I have a bunch. Mostly adult fantasy. Hype drags us all down that deep dark hole.

  9. I haven’t read The Hate U Give either, the hype really scares me. What if I didn’t enjoy it??? TID ended up being my favorite series of all time, and I ended up being dissapointed with Carry On :( I have Half Bad and The Bone Season on my shelf for so long and I haven’t got to them either. I have book hoarding problem xD

  10. Grace says:

So this happens to me all the time, BUT, I’m also a mood-reader. So something can sit on my shelf for years before the right time strikes, but then I’ll read it and adore it.

  11. Kelly says:

So, so many. I’ve lost count of all the books I’ve declared ‘I SIMPLY MUST HAVE YOU RIGHT NOW’ and then they’ve sat, unread and gathering dust. Actually, I have quite of these unread as well. I did read the first Illuminae book and also have the same signed editions from Booktopia too but just haven’t had the urge to read Gemina. These days I tend to purchase more eBooks though just to save space, even those are out of control though. I can’t wait for you to experience the brilliance that is The Hate U Give, such a powerful and influential read!

  12. I do the same thing all the damn time. But I am going to beg you to read To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, The Hate U Give, and Illuminae. Those books are so worth the hype!

  13. Verushka says:

*hands up* Count me in as not yet reading The Hate You Give *joins the self-loathing club*

  14. CHIARA YOU HAVE SOME OF MY FAVOURITE BOOKS AND SERIES ON THIS LIST WHAT ARE YOU DOING

  15. Rebecca says:

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is a lovely series and it will be great to binge them, now that all the books have released. I wish I’d done that, I’m terrible with keeping up new instalments. LOVE THUG – I was late to reading it as well and only got to it in January, but the hype is well-deserved. Best book I’ve read this year, so definitely recommend bumping it up the tbr. I’ve had Everything, Everything on my shelf for ages and while the reviews were positive at first, later there were comments it was ableist O_O Also, A Monster Calls – I wonder when I’ll get round to that one…
