Books for Life is where I share bookish lists, recommendations, and favourites. You can also catch me talking about non-bookish things here, as well as my life outside of blogging. Today I’m talking about…

queer fantasy books i love

A few weeks ago, I talked about my favourite queer sci-fi books, and then I thought: heck, why not talk about all my fave queer books in their different genres? :D Fantasy had to be split into two posts because I do read that genre most of all. So, here are my first five fave queer fantasy books:

A Conjuring of Light

GoodreadsReview

A Conjuring of Light was by far my favourite book of the Shades of Magic series. Probably because there was a lot about Holland, our dear and darling tortured boy. If you click through to my “review”, which is really just me telling you five reasons why you should read the Shades of Magic series, you’ll see why this book is on this list. But to boil it down: I love the characters so much. Everything else about the book is amazing – I adore the storyline and how magical everything is. But it’s the characters that really make this series. They’re wonderful.

girls made of snow and glass

GoodreadsReview

I didn’t really expect to fall so ardently in love with this book but it was honestly everything. I was reading it and I just knew that it was going to be a perfect five star read. It was so magical and beautiful and I loved it so much. I loved how it was about girls and how strong they can be, and how they can change, and how they can love each other. This is one of my favourite queer books ever.

huntress

Goodreads

This is the queer fantasy journey book that we all need in our lives. From the second I started this book I fell absolutely head over heels. I am a big fan of journey books, and this one really perfected the art of it. I really liked the ship, and I really liked how fairies and magic were unique. Now excuse me while I go re-read it.

inkmistress

GoodreadsReview

I will never shut up about this book!! Another fantasy journey book!! With a bi girl heroine!! With not one but two epic ships!! And animal soulmates!! And badass fighting!! This book honestly has everything you could ever want or need in a fantasy book so please go and read it right away.

peter darling

Goodreads

Why you should read this book:

1) That goddamn beautiful cover. I can’t even with how much I love it.

2) It’s a queer retelling of Peter Pan.

3) It’s an #ownvoices for the trans guy rep.

4) The ship.

5) We’re getting more in this world *endless cheering*

10 Responses to My Fave Queer Fantasy Books (Part One)

  1. What?!? We’re getting more of the Peter Darling world?! THE DAY IS MUCH BETTER. ?So least to say I really loved that one too! SO sweet afjskald. And I also love ACOL (surprise?) and Girls Made Of Glass and Snow! I always feel like fantasy does the worst with good queer rep though, like they do need to up their game…(I’m SO excited for Adam Silvera’s fantasy ahhh!!)

I also love Ace of Shades, Six of Crows, and Reign of the Fallen!!

    • Chiara says:

WE ARE! Austin confirmed that he’s writing a sequel :D And I CANNOT WAIT. I’m glad you liked ACOL and GMOSAG, they’re both brilliant. I agree that a lot of queer characters get treated badly in fantasy. But I did not include those kinds of stories in this post because I am not for that life. Adam Silvera’s fantasy has everyone’s hopes up so high. The pressure on that book is unreal!

Cait, I have not read SoC or Reign of the Fallen *sobbing* And for some reason I forgot to put Ace of Shades on this list D:

  2. I FINALLY read the Shades of Magic series and I just love it. Totally with you on A Conjuring of Light being one of the best – Oh, Holland. He just breaks my heart.

I still need to read Girls Made of Glass and Snow but I’m glad that you loved it – it sounds wonderful.

And all the yes’s to Peter Darling. SO GOOD. I’m excited we’re getting more!!

    • Chiara says:

Yay, Lauren! And I’m glad you liked ACOL, as well :D Holland definitely breaks my heart and I just want to reach into the pages and comfort him all the time.

Girls Made of Snow and Glass is beyond lovely! I hope you can read it soon.

I want the sequel to Peter Darling already! Hook and Peter are so lovely together.

  3. Annemieke says:

    Oh Peter Darling sounds amazing.
    I loved acol.

  4. Kelly says:

I’m so ashamed that I still haven’t read anything by Victoria Schwab, I know, I really need to reassess my life choices. I bought Girls Made of Snow and Glass after seeing how much you loved it, I’m hoping to get to it soon after clearing my review pile a little more. The Conqueror’s Sagais a series I absolutely adore and it has a fantasy feel throughout the storyline but it’s a retelling of the Ottoman Empire. Godsgrave was wonderful, the F / F relationship was written beautifully and very sensuous. The Dark Artifices is absolutely brilliant. M / M relationship, bisexual character with wonderful diversity and hinting at perhaps another M / M relationship. Fingers crossed. I’m absolutely loving these recommendation posts Chiara, so many new reads being added to my wishlist ♡♡♡

    • Chiara says:

No need to be ashamed! I only read ADSOM last year, Kell :) So I was pretty behind on that front. I suggest starting with that one, or if you want to start with her YA I suggest This Savage Song! I loved that one, too :D

Ah, I’m so glad you have Girls Made of Snow and Glass! It is so sweeping and beautiful and I hope you love it.

I LOVED And I Darken when I read it! It’s coming in another post since I didn’t feel like it was quite magical enough for fantasy :) I have heard great things about both the Nevernight books and The Dark Artifices! I feel like I’m behind on a lot of hyped up series, haha.

So glad to put you on to some new books, Kell <3

  5. Oooh animal soulmates, that sounds so adorable! I have to read most of these books, including Girls Made of Snow and Glass! Great list Chiara!

    • Chiara says:

It is not so much adorable but badass, haha. The people can like… transform/use the animal’s abilities! And I LOVE it. Jeann, I really think you would enjoy Girls Made of Snow and Glass! I hope you can read it soon <3 Thanks, lovely!
