books-for-life

Books for Life is where I share bookish lists, recommendations, and favourites. You can also catch me talking about non-bookish things here, as well as my life outside of blogging. Today I’m talking about…

newer non-disney movies i love

A few weeks ago I made a post about my favourite newer Disney movies, and since then I’ve been thinking about some newer non-Disney movies that I love! I decided to do newer (2010 and onwards) because there are so many from the eighties, nineties, and noughties that I love and the post would be endless. Also, I didn’t include Studio Ghibli films in here because they’re all wonderful and technically Disney. Here we go:

kubo and the two strings

(source)

I actually wrote an entire post about why you should watch Kubo and the Two Strings but there’s also no way it couldn’t make this list as well because this movie is perfect. Not only is it one of my fave newer non-Disney movies, it’s one of my favourite movies of all time. And I had no idea it would be. I decided to watch it because I knew it was stop-motion animation. And that it looked cute. It’s so much more than its animation and its cuteness. There is a depth to this movie and it has such heart. And also humour.

rise of the guardians

This movie is just so beautiful? I remember going to see it in the cinema and not really knowing what to expect. And then when the credits started rolling I was just like wow. I hadn’t expected such a beautiful story. I know if I had seen this as a kid I would have been absolutely obsessed. Especially with the Tooth Fairy. Actually, I think I would have been head over heels for everything about this movie. Because I kind of am, anyway.

how to train your dragon

(source)

I don’t think any list about non-Disney animated films would be complete without this movie. It took me a few years to get around to watching the first How to Train Your Dragon but when I finally did watch it I obviously loved it. I loved that it was about family! And friends!! And dragons!!! In particular, an adorable and sassy black dragon. BLESS.

epic

Just look at that adorable little flower girl dammit!!! Honestly, this movie was such an unexpected gem. More so than any other on this list. The trailers didn’t do it justice, and I was so heartbroken when nobody was talking about this movie. It’s like Fern Gully for a new generation! How could people not be on board with that?? I have no idea why everyone didn’t fall head over heels in love with Epic. I certainly did. This beautiful floral fairytale is one you shouldn’t miss.

home

This movie was so cute!! And sentimental!! I cried!! I super, super loved that this kid’s movie had a black heroine. It just made my heart so happy. But that wasn’t the only great thing about this movie. This movie is about friendship and acceptance and peace and understanding and family. And there’s a cat who is very cute!! Honestly, this movie is very, very lovely.

What are some newer non-Disney films you love? Do you love any of these ones?

  1. I love that these are all non-Disney animated films. I saw Home in theaters and it was really cute, I agree! And yay for diverse protagonists. I still need to watch Kubo and the Two Strings and Rise of the Guardians. :)

I’m glad! Home is so lovely, and so much more emotional than I expected!! I definitely think you should watch Kubo and Guardians, they are so special <3

  2. Kubo is such a gorgeous movie! When I was younger I didn’t like stop motion animation but the last few years I’ve grown to love and admire it so much! I love all the movies from that studio that made Kubo (like The Box Trolls, Paranorman, Coraline…). And Rise of the Guardians, YES! Jack Frost has my heart. <3 And HTTYD is my favorite animated movie period. I love that entire series and can't wait for the third movie to come out! Toothless is the best thing that ever happened, period.

I’m so glad you love Kubo, as well! I have copies of The Box Trolls and Paranorman, I just have to get around to watching them. I’ve always loved stop-motion animation and I’m so glad it hasn’t died off!
      Jack Frost is everything <3
Toothless is just so precious?? His little face???

  3. I love Kubo and the Two Strings! It had such a unique quality to it that was really refreshing. Have you seen Coraline? It was made by the same people and it’s really good too.
Rise of the Guardians is really special to me. The character of Jack Frost really intrigues me, and I love the way they portrayed Santa Claus. The whole thing is just so magical.
Two other non-Disney animated films (2010 and beyond) that I have really enjoyed are Megamind and The Lego Movie. Both of them surprised me by their wit.
Great post! I love Disney movies (and Pixar!) but sometimes it’s nice to see something a little different.

    • Chiara says:

YAY! I’m so excited whenever I find someone else that loves Kubo. That movie deserves so much more love. I actually saw Coraline in the cinema but it was a LONG time ago. I feel like I need to rewatch it!
The Rise of the Guardians Santa Clause is, like, the most perfect Santa Clause <3
I haven't seen either of those, but I have heard good things! I'll add them to my watch list :)
I adore Disney, as well, but there are animated gems outside of Disney/Pixar, for sure!

  4. Aww I loved Rise of the Guardians too! SO beautiful and such a nice storyline. Plus I laughed at all the kangaroo’s lines.?What an angry…RABBIT. *laughs and falls over* Ahem. Also HTTYD is marvellous, but I haven’t seen the sequels and I sort of don’t want to?? I’m a bit underimpressed with the 3rd one having to give Toothless a girlfriend. Why tho. Not everything needs to have a romance to be a HEA. sigh.

I also love Anastasia!! THE SASS.

    • Chiara says:

Rise of the Guardians is ICONIC. Yeah, to be honest, the first HTTYD is the best. The sequel was okay, but there was so much drama that I wasn’t a fan. IDEK if I will bother with the newest one. Dragons don’t need girlfriends, wtf.

Cait, Anastasia is 100 years old!! That’s the only reason it wasn’t in the post, hahaha. It’s the best, though.

  5. I went for Guardians without any expectations too and I was blown away by how beautiful it is! I’m really interested with Kubo, I’ll try to watch it soon!

  6. I absolutely love Rise of the Guardians and HTTYD <3 I remember seeing a trailer for Home and thinking it looked fun, but I had completely forgotten it. I don't think it got that much marketing :/ At least here. Definitely going to check it out one day though :) I've been meaning to watch Kubo ever since you wrote that post on it! Hopefully it will be on Dutch Netflix one day soon

    • Chiara says:

YESS for those two movies :D Home definitely flew under the radar. The only reason I watched it is cause a friend told me I’d like it. I hope you enjoy it, as well :D Ah, Kubo is the best ever omg <3
