books-for-life

Books for Life is where I share bookish lists, recommendations, and favourites. You can also catch me talking about non-bookish things here, as well as my life outside of blogging. Today I’m talking about…

my favourite books of 2018 so far

I usually keep my favourites lists to halfway through the year and the end of the year, but so far 2018 has been pretty great for me in terms of reading so I thought I’d share my favourites of the year so far! Here they are…

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

This book was brilliant. I was actually a little afraid that I wouldn’t love it because even though I received an early review copy the hype around this one had already started. But from the first few sentences I knew that Children of Blood and Bone was going to be my kind of book. With #ownvoices black rep, a unique magic system, top class world building, kickass characters, and an enemies to lovers romance Children of Blood and Bone has it all.

The Wicker King by K. Ancrum

This is actually my favourite book at the moment. I adored every. single. thing about The Wicker King. This book was so beautifully created in terms of the story, the characters, the relationships, the issues that it touches on, and also the presentation of the book. It’s hard to explain how brilliant this book is without going too much into what makes it special. So all in all, I urge you to read The Wicker King because it’s beautiful and about a bi boy. What more do you need?

Inkmistress by Audrey Coulthurst

I honestly loved this book! And it was a bit of a surprise because I wasn’t completely blown away by the author’s first novel. But Inkmistress really hit the mark for me. I honestly loved so very much about this book and it has cemented Coulthurst as an auto-read author. Queer girl fantasies are literally everything.

Dragons of Nova by Elisa Kova (review of Alchemists of Loom)

THIS BOOK!!! Even though I liked Alchemists of Loom it never moved beyond a solid three star rating. But Dragons of Nova was incredible. I adored every single second of this book and I never wanted it to end. I loved the four POVs that were included in this book, I loved seeing characters grow, and I loved seeing Ari realise she was in love with Cvareh *cheering* This is also a queer girl fantasy, with two queer girl POV characters!

You Know Me Well by Nina LaCour and David Levithan

David Levithan is one of my favourite authors. In fact, I preordered this book back in the day because of this, and because I had enjoyed LaCour’s Everything Leads to You, as well as the fact that it has gay and lesbian #ownoices rep. I finally, finally picked up this book because of the Aus YA Bloggers Reading Challenge (which you can read about here). The prompt was “supportive friends” and I knew this book had a strong focus on friendship so I picked it up. And loved it. There were parts where I was laughing, and parts where I wanted to cry. You Know Me Well was a complete surprise in terms of how much I loved it. Because I really did.

I haven’t been on the blogosphere for a LONG time, but I just wanted to stop by your blog because it’s beautiful and I need book recommendations! And here you are, perfectly delivering. These books sounds right up my alley, and I’m so excited to hopefully read them soon! ♥

  2. verushka says:

Definitely Children of Blood and bone is a favourite thus far! I don’t know the others, so I enjoyed getting to see those here too — especially the Wicker King!

    • Chiara says:

I’m glad you like Children of Blood and Bone, Verushka! It makes me happy to see so many people supporting it. I’m glad o have shown you some new books! The Wicker King is one I want everyone to read :)

  3. I need to read You Know Me Well – yay for books with great friendships. The only one I’ve read from your list is The Wicker King and it’s amazing!! I read an ARC though, so I really want to get a finished copy and re-read it as I hear the final product is even more wonderful. I can’t wait for more from this author, and I need to read the novella that’s out too.

You do! It was so very lovely, and I cannot believe I waited so long to read it.

I’m so glad you love The Wicker King, as well! I urge you to get a finished copy because the interior of this book is so incredible and it adds to the story, as well. The novella was so lovely, and it’s free! Ancrum is definitely an auto-read author for me now.

  4. Annemieke says:

Oh I am hoping to read Children of Blood and Bone this month if I can get through my arc books first at least. I’m so glad to hear so many good things.

  5. Lindsi says:

I’ve heard a lot of wonderful things about Children of Blood and Bone! I’ve been eyeing it for awhile now, so I’m glad to see you enjoyed it as well.

You Know Me Well is another book I really, really want to read! I love David Levithan, but I haven’t read anything by the other author. Can’t wait to check it out!

    Thanks for sharing!

    • Chiara says:

COBAB is definitely deserving of all the love and hype it’s been getting! I hope you enjoy it when you read it, Lindsi :)

David Levithan is one of my favourite authors! Nina LaCour is such a good writer, as well, so I definitely recommend her to you!

  6. YES THE WICKER KING FOR ME TOO. It absolutely ruINED ME in the best possible way. I don’t even know if that makes sense but like…I can’t stop thinking about it. I read it back in January but I think it’s on like my all time top 5 list at least. ❤️?I just think it handled everything so well, and the author’s note legit made me cry. Ahhh good times. So apart from this I think my other favourites have definitely been The Cruel Prince and I did so love CoBAB too! And I’m reading Patrick Ness’ Chaos Walking trilogy (FINALLY) and adoring it to pieces too.?

    • Chiara says:

THE WICKER KING IS EVERYTHING and I’m so glad you love it, too. It ruined me as well. But also in a good way because the ending was so hopeful and lovely? Ah, those boys SLAY me.

I need to read The Cruel Prince! I hope I love it as much as everyone else does.

I have not read the Chaos Walking books so you are not alone in being late, haha. I read a spoiler, though, which makes me scared of reading them *sob*

  7. Kelly says:

I bought The Wicker King not too long ago and super excited to read it. Children of Blood and Bone is absolutely magnificent! If that doesn’t win the next Goodreads fantasy young adult in the Choice Awards I will honestly riot. I was just talking with another blogger the other day about the shift in diverse novels this year, that the tiring work by advocates in previous years is finally coming to fruition. Of course we need more, more books to represent the wider range of diverse readers and communities but I’m excited for books coming out in the future <3

    • Chiara says:

Ah, I hope you love The Wicker King, Kell! It is a book I hold very close to my heart <3 COBAB is definitely worthy of that award and if we don't really around it to make it win instead of you know who then this community is not doing this right. And yes, it's so lovely to see diverse books being celebrated and released. We'll always need more but at least the demand is known now. That is such a huge step!

I finally managed to get a copy of Children of Blood and Bone, and I’m so excited to read it! I had it in physical format too because that cover is just gorgeous ? I was originally planning on focusing on backlist titles for my next monthly TBR, but I’m definitely going to make reading it a priority :)

    • Chiara says:

YAY! Yes, the cover really is striking. At first I wasn’t a big fan but now I am in love. It’s so beautiful, and I’m excited to see the cover for the sequel! I really hope you enjoy this one, Louise :D
