books-for-life

Books for Life is where I share bookish lists, recommendations, and favourites. You can also catch me talking about non-bookish things here, as well as my life outside of blogging. Today I’m talking about…

my favourite books of 2017 (so far)

Since we are officially in the second half of 2017 I thought it was high time I shared my favourite reads of the year so far. These are by no means listed in order of how much I loved them, but rather in order from most recently read to least recently read! So, if you want to know, keep reading…

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee (review)

If you read my review you’ll know how much I loved this book. But if not, a quick summary of why: it’s queer, it’s historical, it’s fun , and the shipping is A+. I honestly wasn’t sure if I would love this book because there has been such a focus on it being humorous, but I fell head over heels. There were funny moments, but this book is so much more than that.

They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera

Adam Silvera is out to end me, I swear to god. I didn’t intend to read They Both Die at the End as soon as it downloaded onto my Kindle, but when I opened it just to read the first few lines there was no stopping me. This book is beautiful and heartbreaking and if you want to be ruined then definitely read it.

Kase-San and Morning Glories by Hiromi Takashima

This is honestly just the cutest f/f manga I have ever read. Everything about it was adorable, and I made embarrassing SQUEE sounds when I finished it. If you’re looking for a sweet f/f romance manga then I direct you to this.

The Fallen Kingdom by Elizabeth May (review)

I cannot even describe how much I loved this book. It was honestly the most perfect conclusion to one of my all time favourite series. I could not have asked for more. It is possibly my favourite of the whole series, which is a feat because I adore The Falconer with a fiery, burning passion.

A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab

This book was AMAZING. I cannot even with this book? Like the title above, this book was the final in a trilogy, and I adored it. I loved the previous two – A Darker Shade of Magic and A Gathering of Shadows – but there was just something about this one that completely blew me away. I love this book to the ends of the earth. KELL, MY LOVEEE.

Nowhere Near You by Leah Thomas (review)

DON’T EVEN TOUCH ME. Gosh darn I loved this book. I re-read its predecessor in preparation, and I am so thankful that I did because I was reminded of how much I freaking adore Moritz and Ollie, and also how much I ship them. Even though Nowhere Near You is super different to Because You’ll Never Meet Me it still had all the things I loved about the first. And that ending. That. Ending.

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman (review)

This book is absolutely divine. Who knows why I never read the copy I borrowed from the library last year, but maybe I was meant to read it when I did. Radio Silence is the book I have seen the most of myself in – ever – and it was incredible for that reason, and so many more.

The Summer Palace by C.S. Pacat

Damen and Laurent being happy together makes my heart so full. I’ve read this twice already, and can see many more re-readings in the future because it’s just beautiful? I cannot even.

History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silver (review)

I mean, I think it speaks volumes that both of Adam Silvera’s 2017 releases are on my favourites list. And they both deserve to be here, as well. History left me brokenhearted, and yet not without hope. It was the most bittersweet novel I have ever read, and I know I’ll be returning to its pages before long.

And there they are. My favourites of 2017 (so far!). What are some of the best books you’ve read this year?

  1. Great list!!! :D I thought that They Both Die at the End was an excellent book, so heartfelt and emotional and kind of a quiet, contemplative book too? I will definitely be buying myself a copy in the future! I have yet to read Silvera’s History Is All You Left Me, but I loved reading the first lines at a bookshop! Nowhere Near You and Radio Silence are both high on the TBR. <3

Thank you! I definitely agree that They Both Die was a quiet book. It was centred so much on the characters and their relationships, which I loved! Oh, I think you will love History if you liked TBDATE :D I really hope you do read Radio Silence and Nowhere Near You, as well. They’re both so gorgeous <3

  2. I haven’t read any of these yet, but they all sound so good and I have them all on my TBR list. I think I’m most excited to read They Both Die at the End. I love emotional reads and this one sounds amazing, so I’m really looking forward to it. Thanks so much for sharing your favorites so far!

    • Chiara says:

Yay! I’m so glad they’re on your TBR – they definitely deserve a spot :D TBDATE was so incredibly beautiful, and I hope you like it as much as I did, Kelly! No problem ^.^

  3. Kayla says:

    THAT ENDING THOOOOOOOOOO

  4. Tasya says:

Ahh I’m so excited for Gentleman’s Guide, I’m glad you loved it! 2017 hasn’t been a good reading month so far, so I think Noteworthy and the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks are the only amazing book I have read this year…

  5. I’ve yet to read A Conjuring of Light, but I’m dying to. I loved the first two books in the series so much and can’t wait to see how the series ends. I liked Nowhere Near You, but it didn’t make it into my favorites, which is sad because Because You’ll Never Meet Me was one of my favorite books. The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue sounds very interesting. I’m adding it to my TBR.

Here’s to hoping the second half of 2017 is filled with even more wonderful books.

    • Chiara says:

Ah, if you loved the first two Shades of Magic series then I think you will love A Conjuring of Light! It’s definitely my favourite of the trilogy :D Awh no, I’m sad that Nowhere Near You didn’t make your faves. TGGTVAV is super lovely, and I hope you like it!

      Thanks, Laura :) You, too!

  6. History Is All You Left Me was SO beautiful! I cannot wait to read They Both Die At The End because I just received an ARC! I also am so excited to read Gentleman’s Guide! Looks like you’ve had an amazing reading year so far Chiara and thanks for sharing! <3

    • Chiara says:

Isn’t it? I hope you like TBDATE – it’s beautiful and heartbreaking. I have! I’m excited to see if the list changes by the end of the year :D

  7. I haven’t read any of these but I have seen a lot of good things about Gentleman’s Guide recently so I may have to pick ti up sometime. And I’ve heard a lot of good things about Adam Silvera’s books too, so I’ll be putting them onto my wishlist too! :)

    • Chiara says:

I cannot recommend Adam Silvera enough! I have yet to read his debut book but I have heard incredible things. Gentleman’s Guide was so good so I hope you enjoy it if you do get around to reading it, Louise!

  8. shooting says:

I’ve only read the first in the Shades of Magic series, but I need to get my hands on the other two! And I have Gentlemen’s Guide coming to me soon so I can’t wait for that one. I’m so jealous you got to read They Both Die at the End but I’m thrilled you loved it. I totally second you on History Is All You Left Me. SO GOOD.

p.s. I shared one of your reviews here: https://letsgetbeyondtolerance.blogspot.com/2017/07/rainbow-roundup-from-vampires-to.html

    • Chiara says:

You definitely need to read the other two, Lauren! They are so good. I really hope you love Gentleman’s Guide. It’s fun and serious in perfect measure. Hopefully you get to read TBDATE very soon! It’s almost as lovely as History but History just beats it :)

Thank you for sharing one of my reviews! <3

  9. Stormy says:

I love Gentleman’s Guide so much! I really wasn’t expecting to love it. I’m not sure why. Everyone was so excited for it & I had an eARC and decided to give it a chance just because of people’s excitement, and this is a time I’m SO glad I let people’s excitement influence my reading choices. It’s definitely in the top 5 books of my year. And I agree with you on A Conjuring of Light & Radio Silence as well–two other books I loved. ACOL wasn’t unexpected, but Radio Silence was. I love finally getting to see a realistic, messy, but worthwhile platonic girl/guy friendship. I liked History is All You Left Me, but not as much as More Happy than Not. I’m still really excited for They Both Die at the End, though!

    • Chiara says:

Me too! I was wary because so many people were flailing about it, as well. Hype rarely goes down well for me but I think I beat mot of it for Gentleman’s Guide, and I think I would have loved it, anyway.

Radio Silence is just perfection in my eyes, and I am so very glad you love it, as well!

I have yet to read More Happy so maybe it will beat History as my favourite :O

  10. Adalyn says:

I just started reading The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and I’m loving it already! My favorite books so far this year have been A List of Cages, Saints and Misfits, A Darker Shade of Magic, and Now I Rise!

  11. Cam says:

I HAVE TO READ A CONJURING OF LIGHT ALREADY! I miss the squad so much, especially my baby boy Rhy.

  12. Aentee says:

Yessss GGTVV is one of my favourite reads of this year, I can’t remember the last time a book made me laugh as well as think so much. The characters are so delightful, I can’t wait for Felicity’s boo! I loved TBDATE and ACOL as well! I’ve had Radio Silence on my radar for a while and hope to read it this year. Fantastic list!

    • Chiara says:

YAY! I’m so glad that people are falling in love with TGGTVAV because it so deserves it <3 I am incredibly excited for Felicity's book, too! I think it will fantastic. Aentee, you should read Radio Silence! It’s so gorgeous.

  13. MY favorite of the year is DEFINITELY “Strange the Dreamer” by Laini Taylor. Her writing is jsut so magical. I didn’t want the story to end, and I’m dying for the sequel. DYING.
Also, “Empire of Storms” and “A Court of Wings and Ruin” from Sarah J. Maas! She is basically ruining my life. <3
I've only read ADSoM, and I really do need to read the next two. I have the 2nd book, so no excuses. ;D

    • Chiara says:

I have a copy of Strange coming from the library! Hopefully I actually read it before I return it, haha XD

Oh, keep reading the Shades of Magic books, Rosie! They are so delightfully wonderful.

  14. AHHH I LOVE SO MANY OF THESE TOO. ?? I adored aCOL. I mean, talk about pure perfection adjfkasld. And I absolutely LOVED History Is All You Left Me too! I actually gave it 4 stars and then the more I think about it, the more ridiculously much I love it. (I need They Both Die At The End SO BADLY.) Also Gentleman’s Guide?!? TALK ABOUT A POCKETFUL OF PERFECTION. *SHRIEKS*

    • Chiara says:

YAY! I cannot even with the perfection that was ACOL. It was my favourite of the trilogy <3 Only four stars for HIAYLM? CAIT, WHY? D: TBDATE was equally as lovely but I think I connected more to HIALYM. It was just so gorgeous. I'm so glad people are loving Gentleman's Guide! It makes me so happy :D

  15. The Gentleman’s Guide is at the top of my TBR – I’m so hyped and it sounds so good (which kind of terrifies me because what if my expectations are too high) but my local (English) bookstore didn’t have it :( I’ll probably order it soon!

    • Chiara says:

YES! I read is as an eARC before most of the hype came around, which I am kind of grateful for since hype usually gets to me. I hope it lives up to your expectations :D Oh no – I hope you can!

  16. Aah so many wonderful books! Radio Silence remains one of my favourite books ever and I’m so excited to read Alice Oseman’s upcoming book this year. Also yay for The Gentleman’s Guide, Adam Silvera’s books and ACOL — all other excellent books I have read this year! (I feel like I’ve read a lot of good things.) I LOVE KELL ALSO.
