thoughts

Books for Thought is where I post a discussion topic related to books, reading, writing, or something pertaining to one of the three. I hope you’ll join in, and discuss today’s topic of

finishing series

I am quite terrible at finishing series. At continuing beyond the first book in a series, as well, actually. I’m currently reading something like 70 book series, all of which I apparently intend to finish. I highly doubt this will happen because of my terrible track record with finishing series, and my terrible memory, and the terrible fact that I continue to start new series without finishing other ones.

Now, there are some series that I feel the need to finish more than others. Ones that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the beginning/s of and just … never gotten around to continuing on with.

And here are some of those series:

the lunar chronicles

cinder

Just before Cress came out, I read both Cinder and Scarlet and REALLY ENJOYED THEM. But did I read Cress when it came out? No. Have I read Cress yet? No.

gemma doyle trilogy

agatb

I have read both book one AND book two, and then I just … didn’t read book three. And I don’t even know WHY. I OWN it. I could read it ANY TIME. But alas, it still sits on the shelf unread.

earthbound

earthbound

Now, this one is because the publisher decided to drop the series before the third book came out BUT the author self published it. I bought it digitally AND won a signed paperback copy. Reason for not finishing this series with only ONE book unread? Nil.

penryn & the end of days

angelfall

I LOVED Angelfall. Pre-ordered World After. Didn’t read World After. Bought End of Days. STILL haven’t read World After.

the lying game

lying game

Because there’s only like one book left! And I have read all of the others. In fact, at one point in time I was quite obsessed with this series, but then I was really disappointed in one of the books and decided that I wasn’t sure if I would continue. BUT THERE’S ONLY ONE BOOK LEFT.

daughter of smoke and bone

dosab

I read the first book and I didn’t love it. But I have been told the second one is super good. So perhaps I will continue. Besides, I have TWO copies of this series, one of which is signed and personalised. I need to read it.

jessica darling

sloppy firsts

Marcus Flutie. And the fact that Sloppy Firsts is one of my favourite books of all time.

div

What about you? Do you have any series that you really should have finished by now? Have you finished any of the series above? Are they worth it?

34 Responses to Some Series I NEED to Finish Already

  1. Definitely read Second Helpings (book 2 to Sloppy Firsts) but I wouldn’t feel too bad about not going past there. Sometimes I like to pretend that the last 3 books never happened.

  2. Kayla says:

Oh! The Lunar Chronicles! Daughter of Smoke and Bone!! I think those are my two favorite series!!!! Of course, I don’t have much room to talk, because I haven’t managed to finish any of the rest of these. XD And I remember reading Sloppy Firsts YEARS ago and loved it so much–it took me forever to even realize that it was a series!

    • Chiara says:

So many people love those series, and I feel a little terrible for not having finished them yet XD

Ah, Sloppy Firsts is AMAZING! I can ell you that Second Helpings is definitely worth the read, but I haven’t gone beyond that one yet!

  3. I think I’m going to try DoSaB again, because I was a bit meh about the first one, but I feel like I didn’t give it enough of a chance? And everyone’s always ranting about how awesome it is :)

  4. THATS IT I AM MAKING YOU READ CRESS AND THEN WINTER BECAUSE OMG!!! And omg you have to finish Angelfall! Actually, you know how excited I was for Laini Taylor and I haven’t read the 2nd book either LOL (maybe we can BR at some point)

    • Chiara says:

I AM TERRIBLE, I KNOW. I have Cress from when you found it for me at Book Fest AGES AGO XD And I know, right? RAFFE. <3 And LOL JEANN! I didn't know you'd only read the first one, haha! We should buddy read them!

  5. Tasya says:

I also have problems with finishing series I started. I don’t know how people could finish series so easily! I also haven’t finished Cinder and Daugther of Smoke and Bone, in fact I only have read Cinder so far! XD But actually I prefer Daughter of Smoke and Bone over Days of Blood and Starlight, even though it explores more of the world. I hope you’ll enjoy it though! :D

    • Chiara says:

I used to wait until series were finished to start reading them because once I have to wait for a book to be released, the likelihood of me reading it when it finally comes out is super low! XD

I enjoyed Scarlet more than Cinder, so you should definitely keep going with The Lunar Chronicles!

And I hope I enjoy the rest of the DOSAB series! I have a feeling I might like the first book better the second time I read it ^.^

  6. Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a series I still need to finish. And I only have one book left!

I had no idea Earthbound was dropped by the publisher. I haven’t read any of the books yet, but they are on my TBR.

    • Chiara says:

Apparently the third book is really good! So I hope you like it when you read it, Tiffany!

Yeah, it took me a while to realise, and I only found out because I did some research because I wanted to read the last book! I can tell you that its super enjoyable :D

  7. I had a really nice spreadsheet that I kept up to date about all the series I started, but lately I’ve been a little sloppy and now I’ve lost track.. and it is so much work, but I’m getting back there. I know I’m in the middle of >80 series.

Lunar Chronicles, Angelfall & Daughter of smoke and bone are really strong series.

  8. I have Winter sitting on my shelf and everyday I ask myself why I haven’t picked it up yet. Maybe I’m intimidated by the size of it, or maybe I’m just not ready to let the world (Thorne) go just yet. Who knows, it’s a mystery.

    • Chiara says:

IT IS SO MASSIVE, HEY. I was kind of intimidated by Cress because I didn’t know if I wanted to commit to it, haha XD But you should read it soon! You get MORE Thorne before he’s gone, after all!

  9. I am absolutely terrible at finishing series too Chiara, so you’re definitely not alone! I feel like I’m really picky about what series I continue – I only go on to a second book if I absolutely love the first.

But I have to say that the Lunar Chronicles is absolutely amazing. Each book gets better and better. And I too have yet to finish The Daughter of Smoke & Bone and Angelfall series. Thanks for sharing Chiara and, as always, fabulous post! ♥

    • Chiara says:

YAY! I’m glad I’m not alone, haha XD I am not TOO picky on whether I’m going to continue a series. I mean, if I didn’t like the first book I won’t, but if I feel like it could have potential later on, I might give it a go!

I have heard that each book is better than the least in TLC! And I really need to finish DOSAB and Angelfall! I don’t know why I haven’t *hides*

No problem, lovely! Thanks for stopping by <3

  10. OMG I am terrified to see how many series I have left unfinished…I should make that a weekend task I think! Like you, I own a lot of these series that I started years ago but haven’t got around to reading them :O

Definitely get around to Cress! I just marathoned the Lunar Chronicles on my winter break and they were so worth it!

    • Chiara says:

It’s a tad terrifying to realise exactly HOW MANY series you’ve started, haha XD I have EIGHTY on my list :O And half of them are finished, so i have no excuse for not having finished them, haha.

I definitely will! These are some of my top priority series :D And I have heard so many things about Cress and Winter!

  11. Chiara finish the Lunar Chronicles!! Cress was my favourite book in the series. Winter is an intimidating monster of a book but also great.

I also still need to read the last Gemma Doyle book (after rereading the first two because it’s been years. I haven’t read them in 2010 at least). I haven’t finished Penryn and the End of Days either (but I only have the last book to go)

Hope you get to finish these soon! Because some of my favourite series are on this list.

    • Chiara says:

I wiiiilllll, eventually, haha XD Oh, yay! I wonder what will be my favourite of them :D

I think I kind of got over the Gemma Doyle books because I read the first two back to back and they are BIG books. But I still want to finish them. I’m a little scared of finishing Penryn because I haven’t heard many good things D:

Me, too! They are the ones I want to finish ASAP, so hopefully I will!

  12. Definitely continue The Lunar Chronicles. Since you enjoyed Cinder and Scarlet, you’ve bound to enjoy the rest of the books as well.

I kinda wish Angelfall would’ve been a standalone. World After wasn’t as impressive and End of Days was such a letdown.

DoBaS is a book I absolutely adored. Didn’t really like DoSaB as much. But hey, if you thoughts end up the reverse, you might actually enjoy DoBaS, even if you weren’t such a fan of the first book. Haha.

    • Chiara says:

I definitely will! I should buy Winter and then binge the rest of the series, haha.

I’ve heard that D: Which makes me sad because I loved Angelfall a bunch. Sigh.

I hope I like the second book! I’ve heard that it’s an improvement on DOSAB, which is good :D

  13. Valerie says:

I would say definitely continue on with the Lunar Chronicles, though I haven’t even finished with the series yet, I’m on the last book. The only series I have finished is Daughter of Smoke and Bone, which I loved. And guess what, I finished NO SERIES in 2015. NONE. So I feel you. I just don’t want things to end….

    • Chiara says:

It’s definitely really high on my ‘to finish’ list! Since I did love the first two books, and I’ve heard the rest of the series is amazing :D

NONE? ;O I finished a few because I was so sick of having so many unfinished series lying around. I’ve already finished one this year, too! But I get what you mean. I hate seeing things I love finish :(

  14. Oh man. It looks like you and I are exact opposites in this field – I am actually terrible at STARTING series, because I’m such a perfectionist that I know I’ll have to marathon the entire series (no matter how long it is – looking at you, Warriors and Percy Jackson *shudders*) (actually not really because I adored both of those series, but STILL).

I admit that I have not read any of the ones on your list, though! I’ve heard such great things about these, especially Daughter of Smoke & Bone and Peryn & the End of Days. Perhaps I will read them, if I can muster up the determination to plow through them all. ;) xx

    • Chiara says:

Oh! That is so weird, haha XD I have FAR too many series that I begin without finishing another series first. It is a problem. I used to be like you, though! I would only start a series if I knew I could go on and finish it right away. But then all the shinies came out and I could not resist XD

I hope you can! I loved Angelfall :D I hope my love for Daughter of Smoke and Bone increases, though. I really wanted to love it…

  15. Romi says:

I’ve finished the Lunar Chronicles and still don’t really know how I got where I am now- I hated Cinder, disliked Scarlet, loved Cress and enjoyed Winter. *raises hands for help understanding this* But we’ve discussed this series before and I dunno. Listening to it on audio was really helpful to me, and I went and tried to read the novellas afterwards and that didn’t go so well, at all, because it’s a story that I need to hear. I need it to be read to me in the voice I heard all the books in, and I just can’t produce the same sense of the world or the magic of it without that narration. If I’d tried reading the books, I wouldn’t have lasted. Apart from that, DOSAB is the only other series I’m reading/read here, and I’m currently waiting for the second book to come in from the library because I reallyyyyyy liked book 1, but not so much the ending, but enough that I want to continue. I decided to be proactive and keep reading (for once, but eh), but who knows when I’ll finish it.
There’s such a sense of gorious triumph when a series is finished, though, especially if it’s been a mostly satisfactory read. Like, I can shelve all those books and know they are read and I’M DONE. It’s beautiful, really. And just imagine how it’d feel for over 70 series. *raises eyebrows*

    • Chiara says:

We have chatted about The Lunar Chronicles a lot. And you know how I feel. Which is weird because I really LIKED Cinder and Scarlet, so who knows why my desire to finish the series has disappeared *nervous laughter*

EH. I was so not really impressed by DOSAB, and yet people tell me that the second one is a lot better. IDK if I will ever get around to it, despite owning a signed and pesonalised copy XD I hope you like it a lot, though!

OMG, I know. I love finishing a series, and I bemoan the fact that it is such a rare occurrence D:
