thoughts

Books for Thought is where I post a discussion topic related to books, reading, writing, or something pertaining to one of the three. I hope you’ll join in, and discuss today’s topic of

reading challenges of 2016

I’m doing three challenges this year! Which is new, because last year I only participated in two. Maybe it’s going to increase by one every year and one day I’ll be doing literally every challenge on the face of the earth. There actually was a fourth challenge I wanted to do, but I don’t actually like challenging myself. These ones are easy peasy, which suits me well *insert sunglasses emoji here*

1. goodreads challenge

I always do the Goodreads challenge because, really, it’s just a nice way of taking note of my reading progress. Since I smashed this year’s challenge of reading 125 books, I’m making this year 150 books.

2. lgbtqia challenge

The girls over at Pretty Deadly Reviews are hosting an LGBTQIA+ reading challenge this year, so of course I’m participating. There are a few different levels, and I’m going to be totally badass and aim for the colour purple, which is 41-50 LGBTQIA+ books. I can do this!

3. indie lgbtqia+ challenge

At the moment, this is just a personal challenge where I want to read at least one indie LGBTQIA+ book each month. That means: an LGBTQIA+ book that isn’t published by one of the large houses (e.g. Penguin, Random House, Harper Collins etc.), but rather small presses, independent publishers, or self publishers. I want to support queer books in all areas of the bookish world, not just those that have the opportunity to appear in mainstream bookstores. I’d be willing to make this an actual challenge with link-ups and giveaways and whatnot if there’s any interest, so if you would actually like to participate in this, let me know, and I can whip it up into an actual challenge!

Are you participating in any reading challenges for 2016? Which ones?

  1. The last one is my favourite, I think. Smaller publishers and self-publishers deserve so much more attention than they have right now, and if one combines that with reading LGBTQIA books, I think you will discover some lovely hidden gems. I can’t wait to read your reviews next year. <3

Me, too! I, 2017, I am thinking of making it a challenge that anyone can sign up to. I think it’s important to support all voices, especially ones that have LGBTQIA+ stories to share. <3

  2. These are awesome challenges! I’ll probably just do the Goodreads one since they don’t tend to work well for me, but I think it’s awesome that you’re going to be supporting smaller authors and their LGBTQ+ books <3

    • Chiara says:

I don’t really like challenges all that much, but reading LGBTQIA+ books is no challenge for me XD And I do want to support indie voices, so that’s more exciting than anything!

  3. Great challenge choices! Even though they’re awfully tempting, no challenges for me in 2016. I need to fall back in love with reading (blogging has kind of killed it, unfortunately) and they only add stress. If I had been though, the LGBTQIA challenge and Debut Author Challenge would have been top of my list. Also love that you’re so committed to supporting smaller indie stories that don’t get enough love! Hope you find a few to love that have slipped under the radar <3

    • Chiara says:

Why, thank you! I totally get not doing any challenges. They can add pressure to reading choices sometimes, which isn’t great D: I hope I find some titles to love, too! I’ve already read quite a few and they’ve all been ones I like :D

  4. These challenges are perfect for you! You are definitely going to rock them :D I really wish I could aim for 150 again, but I’m going to settle with a lower goal to keep the pressure off. I can’t wait to see all the titles you will read for these challenges. They always inspire me to look at books more outside my comfort zone.

    • Chiara says:

They are! Thank you, Mel <3 I contemplated setting a lower goal because I had to be stressed about my challenges, but if that happen, I'll just lower it throughout the year. I hope you find some awesome titles to read :D

These are wonderful challenges, I hope you are able to complete them! Gah, I wish that I could read 150 books in a year, but I think 50 is my max unfortunately. I hope your 2016 is a good year! c:

  6. ooh, these do sound like fabulous challenges! I did I fair few this year, but, blah, I think I’m JUST going to do the Goodreads one unless I get inspired, because I find it hard to remember to keep track of them all. XD And I get stuck reading books I don’t want to read just to fit challenges and that seems to defeat the purpose of reading for me! SO YEAH. But good on you for doing some more indie books! :D

    • Chiara says:

Oh, I totally get what you mean! I loath to read books for a reason, but the LGBTQIA+ challenge will not actually BE a challenge, so that’s good for me :D I think supporting indie books is really important, especially the diverse ones!

  7. amazing post! im joining two of them for next year. good luck for you!

  8. I’m going to do the Goodreads one because I’ve never done it, and I want to know how many books I read in a year. My goal will start at 100 but I hope to make it more than that!

I’m also going to sign up for the LGBTQIA challenge. I have two blogs though, so not sure which one to sign up under. This one is all about LGBT+ topics but I don’t JUST write those reviews here. I guess I’ll sign up under here though; makes it easier. I like your Indie idea too. I’d be interested in taking part!

I absolutely love seeing how many books I read in the year! It’s one of the best features of Goodreads, I think. I hope you get to read more than 100, Lauren!

It sounds like it would be good to sign up with your LGBTQIA+ blog! I really want to make my indie LGBTQIA+ challenge open to participants next year :D
