guest-post

Hi guys! I really liked that Chiara asked me to write a guest post and it was clear I had to do something with Disney or fairy tales.  So why not do both? Today I will be combining characters from Disney movies with characters from a popular fairytale series. At the end, I will give you a list of several books that match with the Disney movies.

Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer.

FlynnThorne, with his sassy and dry humour, reminds me a lot of Flynn Rider from Tangled. With his ‘smolder look’ and dazzling smile, he could be Thorne’s brother.

“Did you see it? It was like a cross between a magpie nest and ball of yarn after it’s been mauled by a cheetah.”

tinkIko reminds me of Tinker bell. Not the jealous, vindictive fairy tale from the original story, but the Tink in her own spin-off. Loyal and very protective, they will do everything to keep their hero’s save.

“Iko. My name is Iko. If you don’t stop calling me the ‘ship,’ I am going to make sure you never have hot water during your showers again, do you understand me?”

mulanCinder reminds me of Mulan. They both want justice and have their own quest to save their country. They are also both in disguise; Mulan as boy, Cinder as normal girl instead of cyborg. They both have their side-kicks too. Mushu & Iko.

“She briefly wished she did have some sort of magic so she could shoot a bolt of lightning through his head.”

braveScarlet reminds me of Brave, and not only because they are both redheads. They are both sassy and loyal to their family.

“But her grandmother had never suggested she could think the same of Scarlet. You’ll be fine, she always said, after a skinned knee, after a broken arm, after her first youthful heartbreak. You’ll be fine, because you’re strong, like me.”

beastWolfe reminds me of the Beast from Beauty and the beast. He is a bit grumpy and harsh on the outside, but when he is together with Scarlet you can see that he can be soft too.

“Her mind emptied of everything but the gusting wind and how fragile Wolf looked in that heartbeat, like one movement could break him open.”

arielCress has something in common with Ariel from the Little Mermaid: they both come from another world. Cress is locked away in a satellite while Ariel grew up under the sea. It’s for both of them difficult to adjust to their new lives – and they are both already in love.

“Captain,” she murmured. “I think I’m in love with you.”
An eyebrow shot up. She counted six beats of his heart before, suddenly, he laughed.
“Don’t tell me it took you two whole days to realize that. I must be losing my touch.”

robinKai, the prince who is trying to protect his people no matter what. He is not stealing from the rich people like Robin Hood, but he wants to keep his country save. He is honourable and diplomatic.

“Regarding Her Majesty, Queen Levana, has she or any of the Lunar court commented on the escape of the convict?” Kai’s jaw tensed. “Oh, she’s had a thing or two to say about it.”

  1. Yeaay, no problem. Thanks for having me on your blog :D!

  2. Yay, this is awesome! I love the post. And I so agree with all of Mel’s matches even though I’ve yet to finish Scarlet and read Cresss. ;)

P.S. Now I get to be Robin Hood and you get to be Merida, Chaira. ;)

  3. Prima says:

Thorne is definitely Flynn’s brother… how else can you explain the resemblance? I really enjoyed reading Alex Flinn’s books. They give such a fresh take on fairytales! I’m really excited to check out all the fairytale retellings especially the Mulan ones :D

I love both Flynn and Thorne :D
I’ve only read two of Flinn’s books and I absolutely LOVED Beastly, so I am definitely excited to read her others.
Mulan is so awesome, and her story definitely needs more retellings!

  4. Flynn is PERFECT as Thorne’s brother, they both have that charm and smooth moves. Tinkerbell is a great choice for Iko too because they have a little sass.

Cinder really does remind me of Mulan especially since they’re thrust in a situation where they have to do what is right and are doubted by the people around them of their abilities.

I didn’t expect Robin with Kai! But it does make a lot of sense because they have a responsibility to the people.

The lack of Mulan retellings really upsets me :( But I’m going to remedy that >:)

Lovely post Mel! I love all your choices :D

  5. Oh wow, these comparisons are perfect! Especially Kai and Robin – I never thought of that, but I totally see it now! And it just makes me love Kai more! :) (Although my favorite will probably always be Thorne!)

This was such a fun post to read!

  6. Awwwwww, I love the mentions of Disney characters :)

I will definitely add those books in the list. :D

I love these comparisons! Cress, predictably, reminds me a lot of Rapunzel in Tangled, but it has been a really long time since I’ve seen The Little Mermaid. So other than Thorn and Flynn, I never thought of these comparisons but I think they work!
