Character Interview: Yosiah from The Forgotten by Saruuh Kelsey

I am very pleased to have been given the opportunity to interview Yosiah from Saruuh Kelsey’s new young adult dystopian novel; The Forgotten, the first in The Lux Guardians series.

So, let’s get this interview rolling!

Books For A Delicate Eternity: First of all, for those who haven’t met you, what’s The Forgotten about?

Yosiah: It’s kind of a crazy, dangerous story of survival. It’s about me and my friends and how we fall into joining a rebellion without really meaning to. We end up trying to save our town from disease and destruction. There’s actually a lot of destruction, thinking about it.

It’s also about some other people I don’t know, and a London I don’t know, but I can’t tell you much about that.

Books For A Delicate Eternity: We have yet to learn more about your past, although some details can be found in A Compilation of Side Stories. Can we expect a larger glimpse into your past in the second instalment of The Lux Guardians?

Yosiah: Yeah, a few things about my past and my childhood will be revealed, but there are a lot of things kept secret until book three. You’ll learn about my family in the second book, though, even though a lot of gaps are left in my backstory.

Books For A Delicate Eternity: You’re a very strong and prominent character in The Forgotten; how do you think Saruuh came up with the idea for you, and your personality?

Yosiah: I have no idea. I wouldn’t know how to invent a person, but I reckon it was stressful. I think it probably involved a long process of frantic scribbling about my past, my ties to Honour, and my friendship with Miya. My personality was just something I had when I came into existence; I was always like this.

Books For A Delicate Eternity: Miya is obviously a very important person in your life – did you ever expect to find someone like her in the state your world is in?

Yosiah: Never. I expected to be alone for the rest of my life until I died of a Strain, and I had come to terms with that. And then Miya became my best friend and my world changed around her. I’m still not sure how I ended up with a friend as good as her.

Books For A Delicate Eternity: If a movie was made of The Forgotten, who would you pick to play you, and why?

Yosiah: It’s weird to think about someone pretending to be me. I can’t think of anyone; I don’t know many actors, but they’d have to look kind of like me—so be Asian—and be able to play my friendship with Miya right.

[Saruuh: I don’t know who would play Siah, but I think Mae Whitman would be a great Miya!]

Books For A Delicate Eternity: Are you excited about where your life is headed, now that you are out of Forgotten London?

Yosisah: Yeah, excited but nervous as well. I have a bad feeling that things aren’t going to go right for us, but I hope they do. It would be nice to be able to relax for a while.

Books For A Delicate Eternity: It’s clear that Honour is about to play a large role in the changing world. Do you think he is the type of leader people can, and will, follow?

Yosiah: I think people could follow him, and that he’d lead people in the right direction and do what’s best for everyone, but I’m not sure anyone would listen to him. He’s really young and he doesn’t have much experience of leading, but people are unpredictable so I suppose anything could happen. He could have followers all across The Forgotten Lands by the end of the year for all I know. I hope people follow him, he’d be good for this world.

In Victorian London, years before the solar flares hit, the Ravels’ world has just been turned upside down. Their father, poisoned by something even genius Branwell can’t determine, has passed away. His dying words were unnerving orders to keep each other safe no matter the cost, and to hide everything he has ever invented. When one of his creations goes missing – a device named The Lux that can generate unlimited energy – the twins are shocked to discover that their very own government has stolen it and, according to their father’s journals, are planning to use it to create unfathomable explosions to destroy their world.

The Ravel twins will have to find and reclaim The Lux if they are to stop their world’s planned destruction, but when they’re transported to an unfamiliar, derelict world, the search for the device will become harder than ever. Honour and Horatia, against all odds, will have to find a way to stop States before the remainder of Earth is eradicated and their world is lost for good, or somehow get every single citizen of Forgotten London outside of the fence.
