FWINFWhat: Flesh Which Is Not Flesh by Jessica Verday

Who: StoryFront

When: March 5th 2014

How: Purchased.

The fortune-teller warned, “Be careful who you give your heart to.”

Cameron’s true love—the beautiful, brown-eyed Wesley—has disappeared. It’s been months since he left, but Cameron’s heart is still like an open wound. So when he spots Wesley at a carnival performing as the sword swallower’s assistant, he can’t help but hope for a reunion. What he doesn’t know is that Wesley is now bound to the Queen of Hearts—a dark faery who feasts on the hearts of boys in love. In order to save Wesley, Cameron will do the one thing he shouldn’t—give his heart to the queen.

*heavy sigh*

I was so, so very excited about Flesh Which Is Not Flesh. I was looking forward to reading a gothic-y paranormal story about two boys in love. And, I did. To some extent.

Now, I thought that this was a novella, but in all reality, it was more like a short story. To be honest, it could have done with being longer. There was a lot to the story, and heaps of things were just kind of … brushed over because of the length. So it was a bit disappointing, especially when it came to the past between Cameron and Wesley. I would have loved to know more about them as a couple, because I think it would have been pretty cute.

The paranormal aspects were  unique, and I would have liked some more exploration of these aspects. I think the tasks that were assigned to Cameron were solved all too easily – in fact there was no page time given to him really gathering what he needed at all. The scenes just skipped to him having already acquired them.

I understand that this was short, though. And that even though I personally would have liked to see this a little more fleshed out (pun not intended), I am okay with the fact that it can come with the territory – to an extent.

Cameron’s character was a major disappointment because I didn’t really feel like there was anything to him. Beyond Cameron’s clichéd interest in pop music and shoes, his actions, thoughts, and mannerisms were incredibly indistinct, and I didn’t really get a feel for the type of person he was.

I was so excited, and so let down. I wanted a ship that I could get behind. I wanted a gothic paranormal, and all I got was a skimming of the surface. Overall: sadly disappointed.

  1. *sighs* Paranormal LGBTQ romances are so, so rare and so, so wonderful when they finally pop up, and it just sort of hurts my heart when the end up being disappointing, you know? :(

Oh, man, that’s so disappointing! AS soon as I read this summary I thought that it sounded amazing… it seems like it deserved to be a full book, at least D:

  3. Aww, it’s such a shame that this was a total disappointment! Characters with cliched personalities and interests? No thanks.

I know, right! I wanted so much more from this story than I got from it. I feel like it should have been longer to give time to explore everything properly!

  4. That cover is creepy.

This sounds like it could have been really interesting. Shame none of it was properly fleshed out :(

  5. It’s the worst to be disappointed in a story that you’re looking forward to! Sorry to hear about Cameron’s limited character development.
